one of the reasons that naval warfare hasn't really worked in age of games is that when your dock is destroyed its pretty much over. It different on land because it is much more difficult to destroy the enemies eco/base.
maybe if everyone started with a more permenant place the could build ships or something, but i imagine it is quit difficult to find an answer

Well regardless of what the highest pop limit is I really hope they bring back the ability to change it. I liked 200 pop (300 would be nice) but I also liked the ability to costomize it. Like 8 player Islands with 25 pop (map size tiny). Aom feels to restricted in the types of games you can play.

The reasons why ES decided to go for a multiple pop-slot units in AoM still hold true for AoEIII; they are not something limited to a mythological setting. Hence, I’d expect to see something along the lines of 1 population for villagers, caravans, fishing, trade and transport boats, 2 for infantry, 3 for cavalry and siege, 5 for ships, ect. As for the overall population limit, don’t forget that we’re dealing with colonies here; not the Napoleonic Wars. Besides, many of the most popular RTSs have fairy small limits (WCIII at 90, AoM at 300, RTW at 20 units per battle). I’d like to see 100 or so military units in large end-game battles, but I really don’t think there’s too much to be gained from having players build up to armies 300 strong.
