Discovery, Colonial, Industrial, Imperial makes sense. Discovery is the early age, when you're just a lonely settlement with a couple villagers, staking your claim in a giant, unexplored wilderness. This is when you send out scouts, meet with the Natives, and perhaps, fight them. The second age, the colonial age, is when you start building something out of that little camp. It's when you come into contact with other colonies, and start making treaties/deals not just with Natives but with Europeans as well. Fighting begins in earnest, as every tries to claim as piece of the land as their own. Industrial is the half way point between colonial age and imperial age. Without the industrial age, you don't have the machinery, the factories, the larger, better ships or the more advanced weapons that can transform your little set of colonies into an empire spanning the globe. It is here that newer technologies truly change the face of warfare. And finally, the Imperial age, where you are no longer a colony, but part of a larger empire, and empire on which the sun never sets! By this point, the natives have been dealt with, or are being dealt with, either through peace or through war, and the real action is taking place between large empires, using all the new technology of this final era before the start of the 20th century, and the advent of true modern warfare.
