Why is AoE III's nick "Rocket"? I mean RTS3 for AoM was rather obvious. AoM was ES's third installment for the AGE series. Is there some hidden agenda for ES to take over the world with this code name or a spiritial meaning? Or is it the adopted nick of the heavily modified BANG! engine?

HA HA, Or is it the sound SuperTrooper makes when he eats his Lunchables?

Actually, now that I think about it....How did AoM's game engine come to be called BANG!?

Sorry for the silly questions, but these things weight heavey on regular fallas mental waves. plus I am just tired of the whole "CIV in or out" debate.

Ohh and DeathShrimp, please take no offence to the title of this thread. All in good humor. Please do not ban me from any possible future Beta testing.

Its obvious.
BANG rhymes with gang. Gangs like to eat food. Food spelt backwards is doof. A doof is another word for a chocolate gerbil, gerbils don't like the heat. Sometimes, when its hot you got real sticky. Sticky like maonaise when its spelt wrong.
Age of mythology was the 3rd game by ensemble studios.
A 3rd has the number 3 in it. Take the first 3 letters of maonaise and u get mao. Mao is an anagram of AOM.

simple really.

Very funny otherwise

I honestly don't see the point to having a feature like that. Care to tell me why it'd be so cool?

It'd be awesome lol!

I'd just love to see it. That way you could actually use horses for what they're for, transport.

If I wanna' get my villagers through uncharted territory, I don't want them wandering through on foot on their own, do I?

No. I get them on horseback with a knight or two and trot them through and if I see danger, ride like hell through the rain of arrows

That and these units that will hopefully have dual-roles will make use of them. As I said on a previous post, I'd love for the Germans to have a Teutonic Knight unit (not realistic, but still helluva' cool - as some folks say) which used a flintlock on horseback, but once he dismounted, would fight with a large sword and have a good bonus vs. melee units.

Likewise with Musketeers. They shoot and fight with swords (so we assume - ES have said they're dual-role units) but once they get on their horses, they can charge and thus you have decent enough cavalry.

And who wouldn't love to see a knight dismount and kill off that last pikeman annoying your outpost?

There's so many possibilities and it'd just be so cool. It would make units so much more diverse without having to change them. And people would of course make good use of each of these to suit personal tastes, so instead of saying in multiplayer six months down the line "Boring! He's sending infatry backed by cavalry" and you counter them as normal, the situation then changes... "Shit, he's dismounting his cavalry to fight my pikemen, and those infatry have just mounted to take out my musketeers"

It's all about replayability and options

And it would mean each unit had a bit more diversity to it, as stated. And training individual units is still worthwhile, because they'll all fight and act differently.

For example, don't think it's not worth forking out that extra gold for a knight when you can just be a cheapscate and stick an infantryman on a horse, because it's not like that. Knights are stronger and more powerful thanks to their thicker armour, and of course by the start of this game, would be the most advanced ever, due to 16th century (when they were dying out in terms of effective battle use) improvements in flexible armour and weaponry.

You get the idea. Use your imagination for the rest

My god w00tdaddy109 your post couldn't be any more perfect. Took the words right out of my mouth.

There was an RTS called "Dragon Throne: Battle for Red Cliffs" that allowed you to mount and dismount units on horses. Was based on the mythical Chinese dynasties. Heck I still play it for that one reason alone...Just fun as hell to decide which unit rides a horse and such.

^^^^^^ I agree, that'd be cool.

Then the stables would simply buy you horses. And you could upgrade horse armor i guess O.o

It'd be cool to decide what to put on a horse. However, i don't think it'll work. Why?

Well, in that time period, the main melee unit, by far, was sword-bearing cavalry. However, there were virtually no sword-bearing footsoldiers. But to go with the horse idea, you'd have to be able to make swordwielding footsoldiers, which wouldn't make much sense :/

sword cavalry weren't the main melee unit, much less by far. pikes were anywhere from 40% to 70% of a fighting force until the invention of the bayonette, which made them near obsolite.

Also for teh mounting of foot soldures, the idea doesn't work in the fact that cavalry units were trained and equiped for cavalry riding, not just some land hoolagin getting on a horse.

Rocket was picked specifically to not give away anything about the time period or game type. We needed to call the game something internally, in Redmond, etc. If it's called "Age3" all over the place, it's a little hard to keep things in the bag, so to speak.

The AOM engine was named BANG! because it was the first short name another programmer and I came up with when we sat down to start writing it. We spent about 5 minutes of time thinking about that one

Rocket was picked in a similar "Hey, we need a codename" sort of way
