I agree, sourcesafe totally sucks.
Clearcase is a step up, but is really orientated towards a campus model. Try pulling the source off from a location remote to your development campus's LAN and you twiddle your thumbs for hours because they don't understand networking very well. CC also hammers net traffic something furious. It's not difficult to completely saturate your network bandwidth just with people using Clearcase.
I've used SS, CC and Perforce on different projects over 15 years. Perforce is definately the way to go.
My favorite tweak is when grabbing a new view it's possible to have the server compress the file download before it sends it over the net, then the client uncompresses the files on the other side. Unfortunately it's buried in a configuration file on the client side. But that tweak speeds up Perforce considerably.
Interesting that there's 8 civilizations with 4 cultures/building types.
I'm guessing Russians and Ottoman Empire share the same buildings. Which explains why they were added together later as budget was found for their common artwork.
The other six I'm even less sure how they pair up into the remaining 3 cultures/building types.
