I was just wondering how home cities will work with tournies and the like. I mean for instance if aoe3 goes into the WCG that that high of a platform even the home cities would really have to be the same so will there be some way to set the home city to a level for a touroment?
EDIT
MEh i just looked back at this and notice my spelling of tourny... Dont mind

the home city rpg concept is going to make this so n00b. ppl were complaining bout ur ranking system in the ee2 ladder, mokon, that the more u played the higher u get, well imagine their complaints in this game where the more u play the more crap u unlock
i personally think this detracts from the pure rts genre

It's a really good question though... Taking away everyone's HCs will remove their strategies, but letting them use their current HCs would lead to disadvantgaes for obvious reasons.
ES should make it so that the Home City is experimental in the innitial version, and that if it doesn't go over well and basically fails with the communities, a patch can easily remove the feature.
But I doubt it would be an "easy" fix. A lot of things would probably need modifying, as a lot revolves around the HC.

DS: Aw, where's the fun in that? You have to lack a lot of confidence in your game to make the number one feature be optional.
The Home City is fun, period. Maybe you have to play it to truly understand why, but it adds a ton of depth and strategy to the game.
A tournament could work a few different ways. You could have a tourney where everyone was say Level 10-20. Those are close enough in level that skill will have more to do with the victor than level (remember this isn't an MMO -- skill still has a huge role).
You could have a tourney where you can bring any HC with you, but you are restricted to only using shipments that are on par with the lowest level dude in the game. This is pretty much how matchmaking works. You let someone use shipments A, B and C but say, nope, D is too high-powered for this game.
A cool tournament would be to make everyone start new cities, and just let them keep whatever levels they earn through the tourney. A guy who won every match might have a higher city than one who lost a few.
Although we don't want to focus on this way to play the game, because it detracts from the whole persistence aspect, we could theoretically allow players to "roll up" a high level HC just for purposes of the tournament (you won't be able to do that in the retail game). But the reality is that the experts are going to know the techtrees so well that they'll know which shipments they want to use for a given game.

It would be much more interesting to let everyone start from lvl 0 and then progress as the tournament goes on.... but then there is one problem. Because if for example in ESO2 you need to win say 10 games to advance to lvl 1 and in the tournament you play a maximum of 6 games then there would be no lvl advancement at all.
You would need to make a "Tournament Mode" where after each win you would advance one level or advance a group of levels so that you could experience the whole persistent thing. Or even better some way to set the number of rounds of the tournament and the system would make the necessary divisions so that at the end of the tournament the last 2 guys will be playing at a very high level with all the fun stuff you can get.
i say you shuld use your own hc and if it is a lower level tuff luck its a challenge but if you have a hi level hc its an addvantage that way is more reailistick than any other game ive seen
