Sales really do tell the difference, which some magazine reviewers simply can not. RTS games are really hard to make "different" from the rest without ruining the whole game play. Changing the game too much would be over the top and throw the whole game out of loop. Is repeating the game style so wrong? No, because that is what defines a genre. Sales show that there are a lot of people out there that like to play RTS games like the Age of series.
Now adding elements of an RPG with the persistent Home Cities, I just don't see where Magazines can come off and say that the Age III hasn't developed from it's predecessors. It's perfected, shined, and expanded elements of game played. What else can it really do without ruining the game-style?
To answer that question, I seriously look at other RTS games such as the LOTRs and SC2, and for some reason, they don't own up to AoE3... although they do seem funner, which I think reviewers are getting caught up on. Maybe ES should work on the games image and try to make it seem that much funner. always trying to get something out of it. :P
