I was never a really hard core AoE2 player, so I wanted to guess if all the advanced players from that game going to own me, or if I have even a small chance to even off with them. (or at least get close). Does everyone start at square one ability-wise, or does prior RTS really help. If so, how much?

What are your theories about this?

I'd say prior RTS experience will help in the beginning, but strategies will evolve as the online community ages and people get to know the civilizations better and better. It then becomes a matter of if you can master these strategies for yourself or, and even more impressive, make up new, better ones.
