I havent used walls once because you cannot build them over a trade route. ES should allow this and just make a "gate" type thing that the trade vehicle could go through.

you can build them so there is a really small gap. Just build the wall right up to the road and then start the wall right up next to the other side of the road, you end up with a gap that's as small as the road which is quite manageble. imo walls are pretty naff anyway because people can attack through them and you cant stick people on top off them. so i generally just use em to make my base look nice. lol

Just defend your open wall areas with lots of units. It's not like they block the trade caravans or anything. I've actually exploited this in my free for all frenzy, I ran all my troops right through the arsehole of their base and massacred the enemy villagers from behind.

walls can't defend themselves. thats why most people don't waste time making them. But they do wonders at blocking cavalry from rushing your defensive cannons. and defensive culverin can take down mortars and retreat back behind the wall if the enemy rushes you. In this case, building a field hospital for your cannons is almost required, since priests take soo long to recharge their healing power, and it only heals a small amount of HP

I'm doing walls more just as a way to blow an enemy surprise attack. It slows them down and alerts you of their motvives a valueable few seconds when you can garrison villagers, train defenses, or send an army to stop them. And it's great against rushes, rushers don't have the time to try and tear down a wall or they will be shot by your defenses.

Walls are nearly useless because:
a) The choke points aen't small enough for them to be cost effective
b) Seige attacks are all at around six range so even if you wall in a tower it won't protect the tower very well.
