I agree they are not good competitively. However, if they are not good for nothing, why design them? Or why pay two people to specifically to work on water? I am sure they had something else in mind than taking out water maps in random map games such as quick search....
I don't think they're good for nothing - I generally enjoy sea maps (I loved large spans of water in AOC).
Unfortunately, none of the ones in AOE3 seem really designed with naval battles as the forefront of the game in mind. Probably just as well, given how poor game performance gets when they take place.

I think the water maps are fine competitively.
The problem is a non-trivial number of players don't think they're fun. We learned on AOK and AOM that some players would just drop the game if it came up with a map they really didn't like so we thought it made more sense for players to have to opt in to water maps instead.

See i have to disagree with that statement. Whoever claims the water first is almost garenteed to win, and to claim water all you do is follow a script. There needs to be more vareity for water maps to be competative.

I miss AoK and AoM where you could mass weaker ships for an "army" of ships. In this, all that matters is who maxed the tiny ship limits. And of course don't forget how theres always a guy lagging in ship battles.

By water maps we are meaning maps in which u must go over water to get to the enemy.

That's my definition too, and this is why I think Spaniola should be in quicksearch.
