So long as there are ratings, be it 1600 ratings, miltary ranks, or even the humble win/loss ratio, people will act in dishonorable ways to rate high. It's simply human nature. If something is at stake, there are those who will cheat. To me, cheating for the sake of a digital number on the internet is baffling. I guess the motivation is to prop up sagging self-esteem, or to intimidate other people. Where I grew up, we have words for people like that. We call them "posers" and "wannabes," amongst other things I could get banned for using here.

This is a game. G-A-M-E. It's not a sport, it's a game. Monopoly is a game. Does your family keep a chart of who's won every game of Monopoly ever played in your house? No. (And if by chance they do, I really pity you and your family) The purpose of a game is to amuse ourselves for a time. Sure, we all like to win, but mostly we play to have fun. "It's not whether you win or lose, it's how you play the game." That little sportsmanlike saying seems to be all but forgotten in the world of online gaming. Apparently most online gamers are out to be leet, and pwnz0r the opposition.

I'm getting sick of people who lag games out, or cause out of sync errors to prop up their precious win rating and their fragile little egos because they got BEATEN. I like to win, don't get me wrong. But I'm not going to resort to cheating behavior to win, it's just not worth it.

And you might say, if winning doesn't matter to me, if I play to have fun, then I should know I won even if the other guy cheats, so what difference does it make? Well, I'll tell you why it makes a difference. It makes a difference to me because I'm not a great player, but I don't suck, either. Oddly enough, this makes it very hard to find a game! People of lower ranks often kick me out of games because they think I'm too good. People of higher ranks often kick me out because they think I'm not good enough, or something. maybe they kick me out because they're afraid I might beat them. God knows I've seen plenty of games with titles like "Noobs only" hosted by people with higher ranks than me, higher win percentages than me, and more experience than me. And they kick me out, obviously because they feed off noobs to inflate their rankings.

And so I beg of ESO, make the game fun again. Get rid of the rankings. Get rid of the win percentages. Get rid of the incentive to cheat. I have no problem if the server tracks such information for one's private knowledge, but making it public turns it all into a "my **** is bigger than your **** contest" and takes all the fun out. I realize the stats and rankings are unlikely to go away, so let me rephrase my request. Give us the ability to play unranked games. If we don't want to be ranked, why must we be ranked? I demand my right as a paying customer to not have my **** size proclaimed for anyone who wants to see.

If I remember right, original AOE had ladder rooms and non-ranked rooms. The sharks with the gotta be leetzor mentalities can play ranked, and the people who want to play just for fun could do that too. And if a shark wanted to play an unranked game and school some less hardcore just-for-fun types, it was all good. And oddly enough, I don't recall ever seeing an unranked AOE game go out of sync.

Mark my words. If ESO makes unranked play areas, they'll be used. I know I'm not the only one who feels this way.

what about people who like to play team games?

their rating and win % is not accurate. ive played team games in which i get all except the least resources award and still lose, and i have also played games in which like all players out score me by 300 and still win (thanks to good allies who can make a 3 vs 4 and still win).

I have two items on my ratings wish list:
1. ESO should keep track of two separate ratings, one for 1v1 play, and one for team play.
2. An option to host a game as unrated. I realize you can easily change a game to unrated by turning on 0% handicap but I'd prefer if the game was displayed as rated or unrated in the game list.

Same here... in fact I would be willing to bet you ESO would be below 2k average in not that long of a time period without win percs ect

IMO the only rating that is really a problem is the win percentage. That's the one that really causes the most abuse.

To move up in rank or 1600 rating you have to play games against people of the same or higher rating. With win % all you have to do is beat somebody. It pretty much guarantees that a certain type of player is going to:

    a) Noob bash like hell.
    b) Disconnect from games they are losing to keep from getting the loss.

I know a guy (I'll leave the name off) who has a 92% win percentage. LOL. I've beaten that guy every time I've played him (~4) and the result is always the same: He disconnects before the final axe falls. That isn't a big deal to me, because I know I've beat him, but it is a cheesy thing to do and he only does it to protect his (ridiculously high) win percentage. His rank by the way is in the Sarg/2nd Leut range so obviously he's not getting his wins against good players.

The problem with all this is that it means that win percentage is almost meaningless and it leads to endless posturing before a game where people try to lock the higher % people onto their team and the low % people onto the other. 10,000 people may come and go before teams are formed. It makes getting an honest game a lot harder than it should be.

Rank and 1600 are good things, they make you want to play to your skill level. Win percentage is abused because it makes you want to do the opposite.

    My 2 cents.

Yeah, win percent is total garbage and should be removed. As long as it doesn't show up, people won't abuse it.

What is needed is a non-rated play area. Or working Direct IP. Or both.

However, why does rating bother you? You don't have to look at it.

It might be possible to have that turned of in your HC page, so you don't have to look at it, but yet it be available to others.

If you don't like to be discriminated against or preyed upon because of these numbers, play clan only, friends only games, or single player.

i totaly agree, i still like rating though. when i play something, i like there to be evidence that i did/did not win. its fun winning fair and square against good players, saying gg, talking about the game a bit and then seeing your stats go up.

I agree. ESO should be split into two game rooms, actually make that 3. One for DM, one for Rated RM and one for non-rated RM.
