NIS (norton inet security) doesn't use too many resources if you disable the stuff you don't want, such as the firewall. Killing the process that gives the stupid "You're firewall is turned off!!!11!!!1" warnings is also useful. There is little point to having a software firewall when you are behind a router (or any other form of NAT.) A NAT is, in effect, a firewall.
