I've noticed that the one factor that affects my playing the most is the kind of mood I'm in when I sit down to play a game of AoE. No strategy can come close to being as successful as a good mindset when you play a game.
When I'm feeling determined and focused I can play exponentially better than when I'm a little less excited about the game I'm playing.
I have a hard time playing consistantly on AoE. My rating will fluctuate 100+ points in a week.
I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on this topic, especially if you're a good player.

I agree.
Though some times if I'm pissed, I'll play well just because I want to crush my opponent. If I go into a game thinking I'm going to lose just because I'm going up against a higher ranked player, I usually end up losing. Other times I have just the opposite and I get a great feeling of determination if I'm facing someone higher.
My mental state definitely effects how I play, though.

That's definitely true. Some games when I feel like I'm losing, I'll just give up because I can't be bothered trying to fight back. Other times, I will play very well and fight to the end, often coming back from a losing situation.
Just yesterday, a spanish FF'd against me will mercs, falcs and lancers. I held him off for about 10 mins using just my TC and a few locally trained troops. I was still in colonial. My TC killed about 8 falcs in those 10 mins. I eventually out boomed him and won.

Yea I agree with you aswell about the Mental Approach on this game. Like sometimes, normally my first 1-2 games, I start and think, yes I m going to win this and then even if they are a few ranks above me I still win. And sometimes against lower ranks I lose because I play bad.
Although this mental approach thing is real, I think as time passes your skill should rise to when you play "good" but even then you will still play bad sometimes.
But its really wierd how your mood can affect gameplay - even when you are aware of what you are doing, you can still do it wrong.

Believe you can win, if you don't think you can win then force yourself to think it.

I know that when people in the house ask me to do something and I have to pause the game I usually end up losing
My mood doesnt really determine how I play. Only thing that does is that^ and for some reason when Im cold I play better :s

I always lose after sex. I make stupidass mistakes if I am playing against a much higher opponent. One time, I played against a liutenant general and I was a captain. I saw his deck, it was clear he was gonna spam WW. I shipped hackapells
