Generally vanilla is a plain flavour. Look at ice cream. Just plain ice cream is vanilla.

Sure vanilla is a flavouring, but most icecreams start out vanilla and then get flavoured (at at least they did histoically). If you want chocolate icecream, you mixed it with chocolate. Vanilla is considered to be plain ice cream, at least in canada/US. Ice and cream aren't plain icecreme, simply because they aren't icecream. Flour isn't bread afterall.
