The ESO servers are going to be taken offline for regularly scheduled maintenance on 08/21 at 1:00pm GMT (7:00am CST). Server down time is expected to be approximately 8 hours.
Thank you for your patience as we strive to improve your online experience.
Not sure if this is it or not, but there'll be downtime tomorrow.

8 hours, that's a long time. Perhaps they are testing the new patch?
One question: what happens if you're playing a game and they decide to take the server offline?

Well, they'd have warned us if it they were patching the game. So it's probably just a regularly scheduled maintenance or, as SahintheFalcon said, some kind of testing. Just wondering myself and destroying the hopes of the ones who were expecting a patch

I think the game goes on uninterrupted, however when it finishes, you will disconnect from ESO and the stats won't be updated.

This is exactly what happened to me the other day when I was playing and the server went down. The game had ended (I didn't quit yet) and I minimized it and went to AS. I saw a thread that said the server was down, went back to the game and thought "why can't they get on?" Once I hit quit it said disconnected from the server. No record of the game anywhere.

8 hours, thats a long time. seems to me they must be testing the patch. hopefully for a release this friday or next tuesday, or next year if it goes wrong
and for any newcomers, ES time does not usually work like normal time.
There is a formula for converting normal time to ES time and I can never remember it but it goes something like this:
ES time = (Real Time+60 minutes)*1.5
So, using this formula; ES time = (8 hours+60 minutes)*1.5 ES time = 13.5 hours
Don't hold your breath for a patch, you'll only be disappointed.

Somme stole my formula
(well the simplified formula, just multiply with 1.5, is usually accurate enough. Last time i used it, my result was 8 minutes after the server did come online again).
