Cover mode is useful if you put, say, a group od Muskets on it and have them get into a square. (this is automatic) Click on a falconet or heavy cannon, and your muskets will surround the cannon with a square formation. It is very useful against cavalry, and ensures a good protection for your cannons; seeing as units can't flank you.
Melee mode isn't all that great, really. A Musketeer has more attack in ranged mode than melee mode, and the muskets that DO get attacked by cavalry will automatically go into melee mode anyway. If the ranks behind them keep up a constant fire, then they don't stand a chance.
Oh yeah, it IS still possible to do rank firing with muskets. (i.e. One rank fires and moves back to reload, and the other steps forward to fire and then falls back, etc.) It's not that hard if you group your units. (hint, hint)

That method of rank fireing is what has made NaturePhoenex the most feared Brit player in the game. I saw him kill 10 skirms with 3 groups of 5 musketts. He drew them out of the base with one group, then closed on the flanks with the other 2 groups. I must say it was the most amazing micro I have ever seen in my entire life.
