think of ice cream. vanilla is the original. then they made chocolate and strawberry and mint and etc. so vanilla is the original, i.e. without xpacks in aoe. twc and tad are the flavours.
and if you play TAD and then switch to vanilla, you notice the game browser screen is vanilla colour. in tad its much darker, the aoe one looks like vanilla. lol. my theory

The term "vanilla" as a slang term has been around quite a while. (It's doesn't come from the browser screen color). Your first definition is closer.
Vanilla is your plain/base/original ice cream flavor (also the most often purchased flavor). It came to denote the "base/original" of any item with multiple add-ons/additions. (Guess you also know I'm from US due to spelling of color/flavor)
