Welcome to the first installment of my mini-series on the Age of Empires 3 scenario maker. In this illustrated and annotated guide you will be walked through the process of creating your very own scenario. You will be able to follow this with no prior knowledge. Let us begin....
To make a scenario, you need to have an idea for one. Think of something feasable and fun. Don't worry about how you will actually make it, think about that part later. For this walkthrough I have chosen the following idea:
So.... let's lay the foundations!
First, go to the main menu, then press
This is not used for actually creating the scenario, but rather loading and saving it.
This is useful for copying and pasting things, also you can undo if you make a mistake, but otherwise you won't need this section very often.
This is where a lot of data about the scenario is entered.
Useful for terrain editing.
Also useful for terain editing.
Used for controlling all the units and buildings on the map.
You will become all too familiar with this menu in part three of my guide. I will not post a screenshot until then.
The remainder of the icons in the UI relate to cinematics, which are outside the scope of this tutorial and only used for singleplayer anyway. The cinematics menu is therefore useless to you now at the beginner stage, and will not be covered here.
Nothing under this menu will ever be of use to you. The default editor viewing settings are perfect. However, enabling the grid may become useful sometimes, but these times will be rare.
