Hi all,
I discovered something by testing Cavalry Archers with a minumum range. They hit and run!
I found that by giving Cavalry Archers more speed (7.75), more range (16), and perhaps 6 minumum range in the end, they skirmish like AOE2 skirmishers.
Of course, I noticed immediately probleme with 6 minimum range; the AI does use it, but sometimes wants to shoot point-blank, and that doesn't work. So rather, letter Cavalry Archers have 1 minimum range to start with, then get a little more with an upgrade, plus extra speed, would make it very interesting to build them.
Note that this allows them to pepper enemies at a distance. Most interesting were the Chiense Keshiks. Given 8.75 speed, 10 damage, 140 HP, 0.10 ranged armor, 16 range, 6 minimum range, not only could they skirmish with pikemen who charged them, but also be frustrating to heavy cavalry trying to pursue them. The very best part of this all, isthis is what they do when they aren't asked to move away from the battle situation.
I believe this is the route people want Cav archers to go in: moderate anti-cav, moderate raiding, and moderate anti-pike unit.
best of regards,
