In the colonial age I start with 10 longbow men and 5 musketeers(card). If I am rushed, I can usually stop it. I then switch to musketeers and begin to card them once I've sent my needed recourse cards. However, it seems that my musketeers can not hold up to colonial troops(even though I have 3 cards on them). Should I be using longbow men in colonial and waiting to fortress to upgrade my musketeers, or am I just not doing something right? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Warlord.

Generally you can't get out grenadiers fast enough to defend against a fast russian rush accompanied with cossacks. The animation and only 12 range of the grenadiers doesn't help either. I've messed around with them against russia by building an artillery foundry first and send in 6 muskts, but you don't have enough force to hold off the 20 stretlets and 5 cossacks before you can get more units out.

theres been this pike musket debate before. Muskets win in pretty much every way. THey are the same price in VS. They have ranged attack, easier to micro, close to the same calvary damage and infantry damage done by hand. The reason why they're better for micro is that if you come up with your meat shield to block the calvary the calvary should run away. This means your muskets get free shots at them with out being drawn out from your li. Pikes on the other hand have to chase the horses off and move away from the li. When this happens the opponate can just pick them off at thier lessure.

On the same note the pike's 5 speed is really useful when you need to run them to defend you longbows, and they are much better at tanking LI while your bows volley on their army (so long as you know how to micro)

muskets > than pikes but i think pikes+lbows> musket+ lbow for resource distribution and more vills on wood so better booming.

You could just do age up with tower, ship 700 wood then 700 gold. Allowing you to have all the muskets you need and allowing you to make your eco for a house boom and lb production. This should get you to like 8-10 min no problem. At that point you should have enough villies that a food/wood/gold isn't that hard. Also at 10 min. You should probably be switching to musket hussar which is much better than any other combo you got. At this time you should have an eco that almost can support a barraks/stable spam. Though you may only be able to make 3-4 hussars each batch.
Muskets also has another great advantage they can be carded and have much better aa upgrades.
Arcane add me to friends some time i want to play you...

I hardly ever send 6 muskts or 6 longbows before 700 and 600 wood unless I'm playing otto or russian.

I would have 20 musketeers, all for defense.

Arcane it doesn't really hinder the manor boom that much since every time you train a batch of muskts your not spending wood. All it takes is good enough macro so that you don't have a stockpile of gold.

the split is closer to all on food/wood with only 3-5 on gold. this is becuase its not a musket spam its a lb musket spam. So you only need half as much as a normaly. And once you have enough to do a double barracks spam your economy will strong enough.

it's ok to send 700 gold for muskets/hussars, but in early game don't keep too many vills on gold until you have 30+vills usually (there are exceptions like against russia or if someone is spamming LI)
