Here's something I started doing as Ports.
It's different age up that actually promotes using units in colonial! yay!
3 vils to food crates, 4 to herd
Have vil queued by at least 10 second.
Collect all food crates, move two from crates to herd and pump vils to huntables until you have 13. Build a house with the wood.
Age up with 400 wood, first card is ATP.
During age up you aim for...
300 wood. Do this by moving 9 villagers to wood, leave 4 on hunt. Queue a villager
Build two ATP's. Anywhere. Preferably one in a trading post and another on a native.
This gives us more exp so we can send colonial militia and improved buildings cards. When you hit colonial collect the wood, move 12 vils to food, the rest on wood. Collect the 400 wood, build more ATP's. If there are alot of natives build atp's on at least 2 of different type of natives. Then you can send native treaty and keep cheap buildings that produce units that don't count against population. Plus it's only ever wood and food.
It's a good way to age up and move onto other strats. It gives you the EXp to send cards when you want and the units to defend yourself. With the free natives and TC fire you can push back a good rush.
This works well on any map, natives or not. Getting control of trading posts is great and works wonders. They can provide good distractions giving you time to work you way to for and so on. It works fine against Ottomans too, albeit you might not get ALL the trading posts you'll get a few at least.
