Hello. I play on vanilla. I have seen many british captains get a powerful economy, but when I try to imitate them, I get caught in a deadly catch 22. If I spam manor houses, my army is too weak, and my villagers all get slaughtered and my town center destroyed. If I don't spam manor houses, I don't have a strong boom and I've not got a powerful economy to overwhelm my opponent. I was wondering if a British Captain on Vanilla could help me out. I am currently a second lit. My name on ESO is Liery. Because of my attempts at british, I am on a huge losing streak!

Hey Liery how's it going? I played a team game with you and arthuro69 and we won. It's JoseCapablanca, unfortunately I'm not british or a captain, I'm a 2nd lt. But I remember you got raided significantly in that game so one thing for sure is to always protect your villagers. Also Are talking more about playing in 1v1 or team?
Anyway some people in my clan (a couple are 1st lts) play British and they play them very aggressively. Although of course they will play defensive against a fast otto or russian rush. I find mirror matches are hard with any civ, and British have trouble against ottomans too. I think British are fairly even against everyone else though I'm not sure.

Hey man it's going well. I'm talking about being able to excel in both 1v1 and team. Yeah, I make 3 towers and a barracks and some troops now to protect my vills but then they have to go after herds away from the towers and they get raided out in the open, because my troops can't always be there. I'll message you on ESO and let's see if we can't figure something out?

I think half the battle is actually countering the opponent's strategy with one of your own. I am not very good at that personally, but I can give you some advice other people told me.
For your example, when you need to expand to herd, one strategy is too build towers out near those herds. You can garrison there while you rally your troops to defend. Another strategy is to go after his herds and protect your own with a superior army. By superior I mean one that counters his. Also use of houses for line of sight is a nice tactic with british. So expand with houses and military units and you will see them come to raid in advance. Then you can send your muskets/pikes/dragoons or whatever and take some of them down at no cost to you.
