Same problem also. Running 1.6ghz processor (intel) with 1 gig RAM, 128 mb video. No problem running other recently released games. This experience with the demo REALLY makes me want to run out and buy the game (NOT!).

There seem to be 2 different installation types. Some people here tell that they have a NewProfile.xml in a folder in the Document and settings path. My demo was by default installed to c:\programfiles\MicrosoftGames\AgeofEmpiresIIITrial.
There is a user directory with a Defaultprofile.xml, nothing else.

still not working

I had to laugh when I saw today's request for feedback to Microsoft about this demo. Jeez, all they have to do is read this forum and they will know what several dozen people think. Might not be a psychologically rewarding experience for the reader, however...

1. Open your My Documents\My Games\Age of Empires 3\Startup folder

2. Create a user.cfg file

3. Add the line +nointrocinematics save and exit

4. Play the game

One of the devs posted this in reference to people who have the game installed but can't start the game. One person gave feedback that it worked. But can you tell me what step 3 means. Where do I add the line "+nonintrocinematics" when I try to open up user.cfg is asks which program I would like to open it with. If I open it with Word the file is just blank. I wrote that command in anyway. Doesn't work.

Hi, perhaps the solution is near. After I deleted the file stringtable.xml in Folder <Microsoft Games\Age of Empires III Trial\data\> the splash screen started (YEEAAAAAH) but then it comes again that f***ing white cross window.

http://home.arcor.de/miggmag/error1.jpg

Now whats interesting:
If you delete the DefaultProfile.xml in Folder <Microsoft Games\Age of Empires III Trial\Users> you get a different error message???

http://home.arcor.de/miggmag/error2.jpg

Perhaps someone can figure that out..

Greetz

Okay guys, after reading the above post about the xml files, well i've figured it out.

For everyone having this issue, you need to update your Microsoft XML parser.

Simply go to the following URL:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=3144b72b-b4f2-46da-b4b6-c5d7485f2b42&DisplayLa ng=en#filelist

and download msxml.msi or click http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/info.aspx?na=46&p=1&SrcDisplayLang=en&SrcCategoryId=&SrcFamilyId= 3144b72b-b4f2-46da-b4b6-c5d7485f2b42&u=http://download.microsoft.com/download/9/6/5/9657c01e-107f-409c-baac-7d249561629c/msxm l.msi

Install this, restore the xml files to normal names, and bam. the game runs.

Or atleast it did for me.

Hopefully this'll work for all you guys too

Hello all,

the reason why I add my post to this thread might not be a surprise - the little window with the big message

I tried what subliminal79 suggested (deleting stringtable) and got indeed somekind of splash screen started where you could select your language. After that the little window returned.
But this time it created a .txt file called 'Age3Log' in my 'My Documents' folder.

Sadly the logfile was empty expect for a line that said it was last opened the time my game crashed.

Deleting the 'DefaultProfile.xml' changed nothing on my system.

Otherwise I don't think deleting the stringtable is a solution. You don't get the initial error but provoke another.

@ ohnoe :

You might be right with that thesis of a incomplete installation.
Me too has neither a 'NewProfile.xml' or any other files in the 'My Documents' folder nor do I have a user.cfg in the '.../aoe3/users' folder.
On the other hand these files might only be only created if you got the game started and create a new player.

Could anyone with a working installtion delete his porfile files, reinstall the demo and check if these files are there from the beginning?

This is ridiculous.

I downloaded and installed msxml3.msi, restarted, still getting error message. So I went back and installed msxml3msms.exe as well. Still got the error message.

Quoted from Vindicator983:

You'd want to install version 4.0 SP2, seems you're trying to install version 3.

Use the link i posted above.

That was just implying that you need to restore those XML files back to their original names (or, copy them back, if you deleted them) as stated in a previous post.

It finally worked and the game looks pretty good. Not nearly as good as the screen shots, but I am not getting those abnormal graphics glitches either. Thanks to all who helped me.

Installed the SDK and parser for 4.0 SP2, changed my resolution, everything is updated and I am way above minumim requirements. Any other ideas?
