are we gonna have them, when will they start, and will they go with reliable, funny, factchecking gamespy or rumor filled but traditional gamespot.

Well, AoK and AoM had civ showcases, so it's kind of a tradition. Though, it's looking less and less likely as time goes by...

I'd like to see civ showcases, but I must admit I would like to see them done by Gamespy. In the past, Gamespot had two main problems with their showcases: most of the time the game came out before they could be finished, and the time intervals seemed almost too long between articles. It would be nice to see Gamespy host the civ showcases this time around. Considering that they've just (or have almost finished) releasing 5 articles within 3 days, I have to say they'd probably be able to get the job done completely and in less time.

the content and rate of publication of the Gamespot articles was all determined by ES, not Gamespot. I mean of course Gamespot wrote them, but ES decided what to tell them, and how often they should be released. After just giving so much exclusive stuff to Gamespy i'd expect that ES would want to make sure to give stuff to Gamespot too since that will get their message out to more people than if it all on the same site. I mean ES ain't releasing all this stuff to get ya'll interested, they know you're gonna buy it anyways, they release info to get casual gamers who are going to these site to look up other stuff to see the showcases and get excited.
I remember back before AOC was released lots of hardcore online gamers where talking about what they wanted to be in the Xpack, and how it should be balanced, but the point was brought up that only like 5% of people ever even play a single online game, and probably less then 1% know t he game good enough to see the balance problems. Im sure those numbers are bigger now, but the point is that the hardcore gamers who post on these sites make up such a small percentage of ES's profits that it pretty much irrelevent if we are pleased with how the info is released. Im sure ES has people with lots of experience in marketing that decide when to release what in order to maximize the interest among the casual gamers, not appease the hard core gamers who they already have in their back pockets anyways
Don't really know why i wrote a whole paragraph about that, but im supposed to be studying for an exam, so hopefully you can excure the insane rant (its like 2:30 AM and the finals is at 9)

What exactly is a Civ Showcase? Is it what we are waiting not so patiently for?

Not quite.

A Civ Showcase was an article that GameSpot would do every week or so which gave information on, for example AoK, before the game was released. It usually had around 1-10 pages, and was the thing people looked forward to every week. You'd find out something new and exciting about the game from each article, which was specific to each civilization.
I was unable to find the articles through normal means, however, two articles (Mongols and Byzantines) I was able to scrape through by searching archive.org. The pages as you see them were relatively how most people saw those articles back in 1999. Notice the target release date between the two? GameSpot didn't finish the showcases until well after the game was released

The distinction seems a bit irrelevant, since the civ showcase content is based entirely on what the devs hand to the site in question.

I wonder what the ottoman advantages and disadvantages willl be like? A different kinda tech-tree with a more unusual army is all we know now.

The AoM showcases (which conjured up a huge amount of hatred towards G$ on these forums when one came out a month late) can be seen here.
