The early cannons were slow to reload, ponderous to move and casting techniques limited the amount of powder (and so range and weight of payload). And there already were a variety of war engines in use like trebuchets that didn't need a constant resupply of gunpowder in order to keep working.
For some reason it seems like the battlefield went instantly from catapults, trebuchets, mangonels and onagers to cannons only. Is this true?
Did cannons really succeed so quickly and all the older war machines completely vanish?

And as you saw, the projetile landed a few meters from the treb. Don't you think you would get shot if you tried to constuct and operate something 30 feet from the wall?

We already had trebuchets in AoK. This is a different game than AoK (AoEIII, Ao3, AoE3,Age of Empires III, Age of Empires the third, but not AoK), so I don't want trebuchets. Who knows, if there is an AoEIV people might start whining about siege towers or something...

We already had cannons in Rise of Nations and they were extremely boring in comparison to lobbing stuff from catapults or trebs, so I don't want cannons right off. I'd rather there be a build up from one age played in AoE3 to the next. For instance, start the first age off with catapults and/or trebs, then move to cannons after that in the later ages. That will satisfy my hunger for the more archaic, yet funner projectile lobbing.
I'm really not looking forward to so many guns and cannons in this game. It could very well turn out to be fun, but Age of Empires, to me, is about going back to the basics of life. Next thing we'll learn is that there'll be machine guns and space technology in the final age of AoE3.
