Here's my concern-There's this "RTS" that's a couple of years old, and the unit most devastating to gameplay is an area of effect unit that doesn't do friendly fire damage. This makes the unit massively overpowered. Its nearly impossible to win without it. Now I understand that's the role you want cannons to play but its going to be very hard to beat a mixed force of cannons and calvary. The calvary keep anything from getting close and soak up all the damage while the cannons blast everything else into oblivion. Now how do you beat that? From the videos I've seen your pikemen and dragoons would go flying from the damage, your archers and musketeers wouldn't stand a chance because cannons are their natural counter. Your only hope would be to mirror it using cannons + more calvary. At that point its like playing rock paper scissors with only rock and paper. It isn't desirable at all in an RTS.

Well come to think of it, I don't mind eliminating friendly fire... But I remember the good ol' days when I played against a computer AI and wiped him of the face of the earth with firendly-fire onagers.
But well, having my own troops shot is not very cool, especially if they were expensive.
