ATI and Nvidia are having a major WAR!
We, as consumers are benefiting form this. They are releasing cards at breakneck speeds. The card you buy will almost imediately be replaced with a newer, better card. This means prices are constantly droping if you are willing to go with any of the midrange cards.
But you also have to consider what you use your computer for. Do you use it for gaming mostly? Do you do video editing?
I will probably go with an ATI Radeon X800XL. I think I saw those for about $250 back in March.
And don't forget to upgrad your RAM as well.
My current system is:
Sony Vaio
Pentium 4 w/ 3.2 GHz
512 MB RAM
ATI Radeon 9800
