I am in the UK and my delivery has been delayed, it should finally be here in the next couple of days.
I have been playing vs the AI on Expert and can beat it most of the time. I like playing Spanish, as I like the early military cards. Generally I concentrate on taking out the AI's fort before it goes up and building mine close to his TC supported by a couple of towers. I then boom to age 4 ASAP and then build cannons to take out the AI's TC.
Any ideas as to how to ammend my strategy for playing online? I haven't really played online since playing Age of Empires (Rise of Rome) on a dial up connection!
Any other hints would be appreciated

I don't advise you to use spanish first if you play online. Especially if your strategy is to boom to age 4 ASAP. That will work against that AI but you will lose almost every single time online with that.
Online most battles take place in Colonial or Fortress.
I advice you to play team games 3v3 if possible, because if you play 1v1 or even 2v2 with that boom strategy you will get smacked hard. Play as french first, since they have strong defense and are an all around strong civ.
Make sure you record the games that you play and take a look at the replays afterwards, and see what your teammates and enemies did. When you get a feel of how to play and can hold your own in 3v3, move down to 2v2 and try that and finally if you like 1v1 games play some of those.
Spanish is a tough civ to use online, but if you don't mind losing at first and stick with them for long enough, you will eventually see there strong points.
If you want to improve your game, you must watch more experienced players play online (recorded games). I have learnt a great deal from watching more epxerienced players.
