According to what I know you can hire merceneries according to the map your on. The thing is though, unless you have limits on them, there is nothing to stop someone from spamming mercs. This could really cause balance problems, though it might benifit the Dutch nicely. I also heard they are getting a card that lets them train privateers from their docks.

This being said, does anyone know a time the past when they (ES)really screwed up? I remember the great Norse over-nerf of AoM but that wasn't anything too bad.

Their late game army, was their only real downpoint

im guessing the mercs are going to be very expensive, and slow to arrive, it will be strong if they have no pressure on them, but not necessarily OP....unless you can spam spahi, that'd just be wicked

Dont ninja/spies kill mercs fast?

I guess those both units (I dunno which one/or if both counter mercs but one of them does at leaszt) will be cheaper than mercs and so if someone spams mercs you can simply get some spies/ninja I assume.

Ninja does everything spy does. Just better. (merc version). And yes they have a bonus against mercs.

The saloon allows you to produce ONE random merc, so odds are massing it won't work. and one map specific guardian unit. The Dance hall card may increase the number of unts available, I don't know.

sure we dont have mercs like jeager and highlander, but we do have swiss pikes and BR

The mercs that come out are random, and who knows how many come out.

And if everyone has them how is it OP?

Edit: Also the Dutch get an extra 50 pop

about 16 settler of unraidable eco till you use cards on it. That is not what i call lots. and 50 extra pop is kinda useless as long as we dont get an eco to fill them

I still think its a slight advantage for them, it may not determine who will win, but it'll be easier on the Dutch...
Who doesn't have to waste their Home City Shipments and on Mercs any more, You could use it somthing more Economy wise...

Dutch get a resendable privateer card. And considering that the Portuguese get a resendable musketeer card (and I suspect that more civs get resendables) the Dutch with their strong economy have lost their advantage, as musketeer cards generally don't cost anything, but privateer cards do.

Stop saying dutch will get OP, since thats what made them UP in the first place Anyway, WE should get to play them as OP for once! :P But if they get op everyone would start playing them, which would suck...

Sandy said a while ago that the trainable mercs will take up a really big amout of pop space. Which will make their only use be in small amounts, the Dutch will have an advantage, since they have extra pop room and more gold, but I don't think a whole merc army would still be a good idea

Merc strategy takes up the pop slots more effectively than the Dutch frees with banks. And actually banks are not that good.
