Lag. So much lag that it would destroy your game..... your computer.... The World! No really lag and confusing.

the population limit is there so that I and those like me who never make more than 100 troops even if there was no pop limit would not be eaten alive by people who just make a massive 900 man army.
And I find that on games with no pop limit it gets boring.
The battle goes like this. You send your troops in, the opponent does the same.
You go have some tea with your grandma and your opponent goes to bake a cake.
10 mins later you come back and find that you have 20 units left from the battle and you opponent has 25. Now you make a giant army and go at it again. No one would ever win and the game would drag on for 3 stinken days.
Thats not what I call fun now is it.

Okay I see. But I think it would be fun to have a 900 man army just for once.

You wouldn't be able to make 900 army but 500 army or somewhere around there. Also the game would take longer with 500 settlers.

pretty much common sense i would think. CPU has to keep track of every single unit in a rts game. more units = more things the cpu has to keep track of.

@Archae1: Saffa said "Actually AOE3 is predominantly CPU-heavy" she didn't say anything about other RTS. I'm not sure, still.

well imagine a 2v2 where every player commands around 900 units.
would you actually want to play like that?
