I suppose you can get a nVidia GeForce FX 5200 if you are looking for a cheap card on minimum settings...but its better off to save up and get a better card.

It really doesn't make sense to aim for anything slower than the Geforce 6 series. Even the 6200, with settings on low, can lag at some points. I've played on a PCI 5200, it's not fun, even with settings on minimum.

I played it on 5900ZT 256bit, 256mb, agp8x, on min-to-med sets@10280x1024@75hz Samsung 710N (enough advertising...). Its great, but its not as hard to master as AOE2 or AOM, 1vPC on medium difficulty is quite easy imo!

Hey, I got the Graphics card that you guys advised me to get (6600gt, AGP) but I am having trouble installing it. This is my first time opening up the computer and doing stuff inside, and I am fine up to this paticular instruction:

Thing is, my Power Supply doesn't have anything that you can plug things into on it. So I am kinda stuck as to how I am to use this cord to connect the card up to the PS.

I'm very n00b at all this and I might be way off. Any help is appreciated.

If i was in that situation i'd pull the small power connector off my floppy drive that I never use. Adaptors are also sold that take the big power connectors to the small kind. Should be really cheap.

Hey guys, instead of making a new thread of 'What card should I use???' I'll post it here. I'm not too computer savy, so if I left anything out, just tell me what it is and where to find the info.

ok, from running dxdiag:

System Model- Dimension 3000
BIOS- Phoenix ROM BIOS Plus version 1.10 A01
Processor- Intel(R) Pentium (R) 4 CPU 2.80GHz
Memory- 510MB RAM (I know, I need to buy RAM too, anything I need to know about that?)
DirectX Version: DirectX 9.0c

Display:

Name: Intel(R) 82865G Graphics Controller
Manufacturer: Intel Corp.
Chip type: Intel(R) 82865G Graphics Controller
DAC Type: Internal
Approx. Total Memory: 96.0 MB
Current Display Mode: 1024x768 (32 bit)(75Hz)

yeah, it sucks, don't laugh.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

The Dimension 3000 is a crippled motherboard, with no dedicated graphics bus. It will not accept AGP or PCIx graphics cards. It will accept a PCI one, with the best choices shown here.

This are the stats of my pc:
P4 CPU 3.00 Ghz
1024 MB RAM
ATI Radeon X600 256 MB HyperMemory

I just wanted to know if upgrading to the Geforce 6600GT 128 MB would be worth the money, or should I save up for a better model?

Well the GeForce 6600GT 128MB is what I got, and it runs AoE3 on close to full settings great, only things I have down is Anti-Alaising on low and shadows on high instead of very high.

Colussus, the 6800GS is the most bang for the buck.

At stock settings, the vanilla 6800's are only slightly better than a 6600GT, so unless you are an overclocker the 6600GT is the next best for the money.

Sounds nice Sampson.

For those who can't read German, keep in mind those framerates in that www-link, are used with "high shader" settings, because only PixelShader 3.0 cards can go to "very high" shader settings.

Here's a link to performance with VERY HIGH shader settings.

6600GT, 128MB card here.

Usual boring 2.8GHz chip, GB of RAM.

THAT'S why I can set the game to "very high" shaders, and my buddy can't (Old 4600ti Geforce)

Basically, I think I read something to the effect here elsewhere, with shaders on very high, the Nvidia chipsets produce an undesirable effect (in my opinion)

It almost adds a filmy type of gauze over the entire screen. Don't know if this is what they intended, but along with chopping 10 Frames a second, it just looks like there is a film over the screen... not good.

Oh, well, the water has gorgeous multi-colored reflections too.. but on "high" the water is still super "fancy" and reflective, just not with all the purple shades..

[Translation]
However we have the Shader details reduced to "High", since "Very High" is only available on SM3 cards and SM2 cards cannot represent some graphic details, otherwise, the results would be a false comparison.
[/End Translation]

Unlike the Tom's charts, which when containing SM2 and SM3 cards, use different settings, which is a false comparison.

Example of a false comparison

in which, in some fairness, Tom's says as much:

Quote:

In the following we show all the cards with Pixelshader 2.0 and 3.0. Note here that making a direct comparison of the frame rates will have its restrictions due to the different technologies.

Therefore, the important thing to remember, is that the "relative performance" in the Deutsch chart was measured for all the cards at the exact same settings performing identical tasks.

In the Toms chart, the SM3 cards are asked to do more work than their SM2 counterparts. SM2 cards do not allow the same graphics options in AOE3.

However, by juxtaposing SM2 and SM3 cards on the same chart, the implication is that they were measured whilst performing the same tasks, which in fact, they were not.

Well, as long as the AoE3 Heaven forum readers have as much info as possible when choosing a good graphics card, I don't care.

Giving links to two different AoE3 frame rate comparisons gives them the best possibility to compare different graphic cards.

http://www.computerbase.de/artikel/hardware/grafikkarten/2005/test_asus_extreme_n780 0gt_dual/10/#abschnitt_age_of_empires_3

It's good if you want to see how fast are gfx-cards with high settings. (tnx to Pale Horse

http://www.tomshardware.com/2005/12/02/vga_charts_viii/page5.html

And this is if you want to see how fast are gfx-cards with very high settings.

http://www.tomshardware.com/2005/12/02/vga_charts_viii/page7.html

And yes, forget this last one, as Pale Horse said.

Read them all, and you get the best picture.

NVIDIA is dead-stuck. Asus released a TOP x1800xt which beats in 50% fo the trials the 7800gtx 512mb, plus a great bundle. http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/asus_extreme_x1800_xt_top/
Having in mind that x1900xtx comes out the 24th Jan, and the G71 will come 1 and a half month later. SO a few months ago ATI was the big looser, now things have gone exactly the opposite way! What a dynamic hardware world...

I want to know what graphics card to buy for around $125. Is this card any good: VisionTek - XTASY RADEON X300 SE Graphics Card?

I'm ultra n00b at buying/installing hardware. No tech-jargon for me plz!

X300 will be disappointing.

Dunno what country you are in, but $125 US will buy a good 6600GT in either AGP or PCIx.

$125- x1300XT 512mb, 128bit PCIE
$160- x1600XT 256MB, 128bit PCIE (RECOMMENDED) X1600XT BEATS THE 6600GT. Check Tom's Hardware site, there is review of several OC budget cards, with the x800 GTO2 OC by 10% for core and 9.75% for memory clocks. x800gto2 when OC managed to beat 7800gt in a few benchies. SO if u have good cooling get x800gto2.
