that's wack man. i'm no anarchist.

i mean, i think there are fundamental problems with our civilization that make it unsustainable for the long term, and i don't know if these can be fixed without some sort of collapse, but i definitely don't want to completely do away with complex society altogether.

Ever onwards marches the Red Menace, they are here to undermine our American ways and bring the evil that is Communism to our shores.

We must take up arms and fight communism wherever we see it, whether the perpetrators be our next door neighbours, our best friends or even our own family.

They must be stopped before they steal our wives and daughters to put to work on their collective land, before they steal our nation for themselves.

I remember a while back some of us were discussing Minnesota schools. Apparently at that time they were second to dead last in education funding (second only to Mississippi).

Wisconsin seems to be trying to actually beat Mississippi in a race to the bottom.

That's not the half of it. In 2004, Baltimore City schools declared bankruptcy due to massive fiscal malfeasance and mismanagement. The state governor declared an emergency and IIRC obtained federal aid to bail out the school district. Meanwhile, the schools were shut down for 3 weeks. In the news, some parents interviewed said it was a devastating blow because "nobody is watching my kid and I can't leave him alone for a second".

That really stood out in my mind. Certainly, our schools should be surrogate parents and babysitters above all else.

Sure, working parents are entitled to shit a brick if suddenly they have to arrange child care because the schools are closed. But it shouldn't be seen as a holding tank or state daycare.

These are kids who at 6 or 7 should have basic life skills such as preparing food from simple ingredients, knowing how to heat up a can of soup without burning down the house, how to operate a microwave safely, trusted family and friends to call for help when parents aren't home, how to stay safe in the home and when walking to the bus stop. But they don't. This responsibility is increasingly falling on teachers and schools. We are entrusting strangers with telling our kids "Don't talk to strangers".

And these are just more examples of the reasons why We Can't Have Nice Things (TM).

I like anarchy from the viewpoint that it requires the utmost level of responsibility from the individual. Every action and every situation has to be judged independently, not relying on conventions but on personal experience; communication, dialogue and mutual agreement become tools rather than foundations for an inflexible society.

Of course anarchism is like communism in that it should work according to theory, but absolutely does not work in practice. I do like intellectual anarchy though, as long as the lines around it are clearly drawn.

I do find it weird that so many people seem to struggle to grasp the idea of idealism and realism, although I don't support either of them they are both interesting ideas in theory.

Heh, on the first of April at about 12 am amidst much rain ten officers showed up at the occupation and forced us to clear out of the building. The cops had came around at nine and took our ID information down like previous nights which is why there were so few people there. I myself was out dumpstering with two others, but, I guess, the officers initially said they had twelve minutes to leave the building. It was kind-of poopoo. I don't know where we're going from here. I've given a ten-fifteen minute lecture on direct action in at least one class every day this week. There are a lot of various things in the work. I think we might email bomb our current head of student affairs, president, future-president, the board of regents, and our governor in the next week. The university is also giving a presentation full of erroneous information to grad students in science and engineering on unions tomorrow that we'll be protesting/causing a ruckus during.

Levels of apathy on this campus are disgusting. Levels of apathy in this world are disgusting.

Comfort breeds apathy. As does the illusion of control. People think they have control because we live in a republic but what they don't understand is that the real issues are buried under so much bullshit about birth certificates and the revelation.

We're continually taught that the individual can't do anything momentous while at the same time marketing markets the individual furthering the idea that the individual can't surmount anything real, and can only make decisions as to which apple product they'd like next.

I'm curled into a corner crying for actual humanity.

power-elite brainwashing sheep 1984 brave new world etc. and all that, but the fact is most people are apathetic because the vast majority of them have enough to eat, have safe place to live and sleep, are more free from disease and sickness and violence and oppression than any other people in human history, and so on. utopic revolutionary societies are a pleasant idea, but not a worthy goal when the risk is losing everything and the gain is only regaining what you risked in the first place. marcusian doomsday messages won't resonate when most people are satisfied with what they have.

most people's sense of complacency may be a fault of a lack of vision for the future, but otherwise their satisfaction is perfectly warranted. as a species we may have problems, but let's not pretend we're doing so poorly.

It isn't apathy that's the real problem, anyway; it's a persistent lack of perspective that plagues us. It's easy to get caught up in the rhetoric about free markets and liberalism and socialism and marxism and libertarianism, in republicans and democrats and what have you, but none of those ideals are based in actual human experience. the reality is civilization is just a bunch of humans struggling to get along as best they can, and there's no overarching principle that defines or explains how it all works. pragmatism may not be as sexy or as emotionally fulfilling as idealism, but it's, ironically, the only ideal that will get us to where we want to go (wherever that is). part of that is recognizing where we're doing great, and what we need to do to make sure we're still doing that well in fifty years.

peace.
