Soccy came to the conclusion that we should allow ONE off-topic conversation thread, here we are.
Keep in mind that while you can talk off-topic, you will NOT be allowed to spam. You may not say things like: "+1" (and nothing else), you must post as either a reply to teh current "topic" or try and create a new topic, invalid useless posts will be considered spam and it will be dealt with.
That said, no AoMH/AoKH "I'm better" comments is allowed either.
Finally, have fun silly gooses!

Thanks, Captain Obvious.
Since when are all people that have to use advanced maths "mathematicians".?

Not all math is based on imaginary numbers.
True, but in Algebra 2 at least a week is spent on them. That's one week of something completely useless.
That was an example. Much of the rest of the stuff done in high school math is also useless.
Quote:
that's not difficult: fourier and laplace transformations are very often used in electric circuits, fourier series are used to calculate the energy of waves, ...
How often do you do that in everyday life?
Wait, let me rephrase that. How often does the average person do that in everyday life?

Ok. Add up all the pictures in the Hot Girls Thread on Keira Knightley..whoops there's math.
There's twelve in the AoMH one, and 11 in the Ao3H one, if I remember correctly. That's not high school math anyway. That's just counting, or even looking at the last number in the list of pictures.

How about driving a car? How much gas to you need to go X miles?
That's also not high school math.

Twelve oranges cost $.69. How many oranges can you get with $1.00? (Solve for X oranges.)
You don't need to worry about the square root of negative one in that problem. --

I couldn't agree more. Especially Trig.
You rock, Rick. --
The only time you'll ever use most of high school math is if you become a math teacher.

What I meant is people who end up pursuing math as part of their career or as their career. I phrased it badly.

My post was aimed at Shiva.
And also anyone saying math is not important in real life is... well... mentally deranged. Basically everything in life depends on maths in some form or another.

With history classes as a close second.
True that.
Unless you have a poor history teacher who concentrates too much on dates and names, in which case that history class becomes about as useful as factoring trinomials.

Mete has a point. Anything above arithmatic really isn't used in real life. However, the ability to communicate efficiently and correctly is used in all fields.
A good example: Rain Man. That guy could solve mathematical problems like no one else but nobody ever took him seriously.
And I suck at math, but program all the time. That's the beauty of computers: They do all the math for you.
Where be your gibes now? your gambols? your songs? Your flashes of merriment, that were wont to set the table on a roar? Not one now, to mock your own grinning?

You should get off of the computer and do something useful then. That should clear it right up.
