Game Version: TWC
Gandalf's FFA Tourney Map
A random map script for AOE3: The War Chiefs
by RF_Gandalf

This FFA Tourney Map is a new random map for designed for use in a 6 player FFA tourney, created for The War Chiefs. It can be played with other player numbers, but with less than 6 players it will still be the same six-player size to allow all of the trade route features to be placed. The main purpose of this map is to give the most fair map possible for FFA gameplay. Unlike most ES maps, the trade route and Native American trade posts should always be buildable by all players.

This map represents an 'unknown' land with a wide variety of randomly chosen terrain patterns possible (28 patterns total), each with fauna, treasures, and decorations to fit the theme. Some of the 28 patterns have 'sub-patterns' with the base terrain pattern varying slightly or significantly. The Native Americans also roughly fit the terrain patterns as well.

Player starting positions, trade routes and map size will randomly vary between two different variations, as follows:

The first version will have players located in a ring at the periphery of the map, with a central trade route (along one of 2 axes) having 3, 4 or 5 trade posts (50% chance of 4 TPs, 25% chance of either 3 or 5 TPs). The map is always about the diameter of Great Lakes at 6 player size for 6 or less players (and Great Lakes size for for 7 and 8 players as well).

The second version will have the players start in a ring about 1/4 of the way from the map edge to the center, with the trade route/s located at the edge. There can be a single ring around the whole map (similar to Great Lakes) or 2 semicircles along the same general route. This version has more trade route trade posts, randomly varying between 4-8 (50% chance of 6 TPs, 25% chance of 8 TPs, and 12.5% chance of both 4 and 5 TPs on this version of the map). This second version has a 15% greater diameter and corresponding larger area than the first version, so scouting is a little more time consuming. The larger size is to accomodate the need for the trade post fairness. This version will also always be the 6 player size for 6 or less players, with slight increase in size for both 7 and 8 players.

The Native American Villages generally fit the map terrain theme, and will vary between 2-4 per map, located toward the central area of the map. The natives will be of either all of the same or of two types per map.

The food resources on each map can vary slightly. There are always 3-5 'herds' of some type per player - the numbers vary randomly and types will vary per map theme. Most of the maps have sheep, cows or llamas but a few of the patterns do not. Most of the map patterns have some berries at the start area, and a chance of some other berries on the map. All maps have 2 mines per player near the start area (though the second is generally just out of the starting screen), with an additional several per player further off. There are usually a few more total mines than on the standard maps. Mines can vary in type, with silver, copper, tin and gold mines possible. Silver, tin and copper mines have the same value, but gold mines are worth 2.5x the amount of coin, and occur randomly in some map patterns (but are usually more distant, not the start area mines). Forests are placed fairly, and all players have 2 additional small clumps of trees near the start area to be sure initial wood access is equal. Of course this being a random map not all resources are some identical exact distance from player start positions

Treasures or nuggets are placed in slightly increased numbers and are keyed to the map type or pattern - a total of 5-6 per player per map - 2 of the easy ones nearby, and 3-4 of increased difficulty further off (always there are per player one level 2, one level 3, one level 4 and randomly one either level 2 or 3 treasure).

This map really supports FFA play, and extensive testing on the current version was without problems. Of course the map can be played at any player number and with standard teams with the same fairness. For lower player numbers it will be like playing on a 'large' map. The versions tend to play a little differently, with warfare really more concentrated around the center trade route trade posts in version one.

To play this map, the files must be placed in the folder: My Documents\My Games\Age of Empires 3\RM2. Please do not place them in the game's install folder - that will not work. When you start up a skirmish game in Single-player or Multiplayer, use the small blue 'Custom Map' button, which allows you to then select one the random maps in that My Games folder from the drop-down window. The files will transfer in Multiplayer if your allies or opponents have not downloaded the files. Please do not edit the files or you will have compatibility problems in Multiplayer. Do not try to play this in the original AOE3, as the new terrains and natives will not work.

Thanks to ES for making map scripting possible.

Hi RF_Gandalf,

Sounds like a very nice map.
FFA players will love this one for sure.

In the past I have seen many players suggesting to Ensemble to make 2V2V2 maps.
I therefore wanted to suggest converting this map to 2V2V2.
That shouldn’t be too hard to do, right?

If you will do that, then I believe you will be the first one who came up with 2V2V2 map.
That will also qualify it to be on the news page. ;)

There is no way that I am aware of to change the team options for a RMS. The game itself allows either 2 teams or FFA as the only options - I do not see a way to change that in a mere RMS (just like you cannot make a custom scenario work for 3 players without a change in how the game itself works). Changes are needed in the UI part of the game setup screen and likely in major coding parts of the game.

Actually it is very easy to set up custom scenario with as many teams as the designer likes.
I just went to the editor and generated a 6 player map with 3 teams (2v2v2) and it works great.

I am kind of surprise that RMS doesn’t allow for more than two teams (other than FFA).
However, you are the RMS expert, so you know better than me.
