Strategic Objectives: Islands

Author File Description
File Details
Game Version: TWC
Strategic Objectives: Islands

This scenario is for both “AOE 3: Original” (Vanilla) and “AOE 3: TWC”.

This scenario requires the latest patch.

“Strategic Objectives” is a scenario that qualifies as a new game type.

It allows to capture neutral buildings that are guarded by guardians (such as Forts and Barracks), and even re-capture them from the AI and vice versa.
Captured buildings offer either economic bonus or military bonus (free units).

Players can also capture Great Cannons and use them to construct Fixed Guns anywhere on the map.

This scenario MUST be executed via one of the Scenario Launchers (see list bellow).
Executing one of the scenarios directly may cause AOE3 to crash under certain circumstances.
This issue has been notified to Ensemble and hopefully it will be resolved in the future.
In the meantime please execute only the Scenario Launchers and everything will be working fine.

Do NOT execute the “Launcher” from the Editor – That won’t work.
Execute the “Launcher” from the Main Menu.
Click on “Single Player”, then on “Custom Scenario”, and then look for one of the “Launch” files.

The following is the list of the “Scenario Launchers” that you can execute:

xStrat Obj Launch Island Easy.age3Xscn
xStrat Obj Launch Island Moderate.age3Xscn
xStrat Obj Launch Island Normal.age3Xscn
xStrat Obj Launch Island Hard.age3Xscn

Strat Obj Launch Island Moderate.age3Xscn
Strat Obj Launch Island Normal.age3scn
Strat Obj Launch Island Hard.age3scn

These scenario launchers will allow you to select the civ that you want to play with and launch the appropriate scenario.

Game Play

The Player and the AI start on a small island with limited resources.
There is also a main land where the players can expand their base.

For more information please visit the following link and read about the unique game play that “Strategic Objectives” offers.

It also tells you how to construct Fixed Guns anywhere on the map.

Scenario Versions

I have made several versions with different civs to play with and different difficulty levels.

For Vanilla:

There are 3 different civ versions and 3 difficulty levels for each civ ( Normal and Hard).

For TWC:

There are 4 different civ versions and 4 difficulty levels for each civ (Easy, Moderate, Normal , and Hard)

“Easy”, “Moderate”, and “Normal” versions are utilizing “Moderate” AI.
The “Hard” version utilizes “Hard” AI.

For average players I would suggest to play the “Moderate” version first.
Very good players can start with the “Normal” version.

No cheating codes are allowed with these scenarios

In the event the cheat codes are being used the AI will receive 100 mercenaries with 20,000 HP.

So just play the level that fits your level the most.

Installation Instructions

Please note that these scenarios don’t mod your game in any way.

Installation Instructions for AOE 3: TWC

Copy all the “Xstrat Obj….age3Xscn” files to
"My Documents/My Game/Age of Empires 3/Scenario"

Copy all the "HomecityX…….XML" files to

Copy the music file Glory.mp3 to the C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Age of Empires III\Sound

Installation Instructions for AOE 3: Vanilla

Copy all the "Strat Obj…….age3scn" to
"My Documents/My Game/Age of Empires 3/Scenario".

Copy all the "Homecity_……XML" files to
"Program Files/Microsoft Games/Age of Empires III/Campaign/Blood Ice Steel"

Copy the music file Glory.mp3 to the C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Age of Empires III\Sound

Message for the Reviewers

Please review either the “Moderate” or “Normal” versions of the scenario depending on your skill level.
The “Hard” version was made only for the contest and the “Easy” version just for practice.

Please keep in mind that despite the fact that the AI has more units than the human player, the human player can counter that with superior strategy and tactics, especially with a good use of Fixed Guns.

Special Thanks

I want to thank Schildpad (also known as Furby_Killer) for helping me test the various “Strategic Objectives” scenarios and for his important advice.
Schildpad’s help and feedback was most valuable.

I want to thank pftq for his great “Advanced Effects” that helped me enhance the AI to a new level, and to introduce the “Building Fixed Guns” feature.

I also want to thank somme for his brilliant “Villager Second Calculator” which I used for the free units balancing, and to kjn for making the screen shots for me.

Thank you,

Moshe Levi

AN_Nuisance It may be just me...but every time I tried to launch the scenario from the scenario launcher on custom scenarios then an xstratislands/civ/difficulty, my game crashed... Using WC... tried it on xstrat spain on Norm then Mod then Easy...thought it might be the civ so tried the same thing with Ports....1st on Normal...then Mod...then easy...crashed every time....is it just me?

I believe that you are trying to execute the actual scenario and not the Launcher Scenario.

Executing the actual scenarios will crash AOE3 as I warned above.
The scenarios with civ names are the actual scenarios.

Look for one of these files and execute one of them:
xStrat Obj Launch Island Moderate.age3Xscn
xStrat Obj Launch Island Normal.age3Xscn

It may be too hard to beat the “Normal” version on the first try.
Try to practice on “Moderate” first and then try the “Normal” level.
Ultra_Janissary The game crashed. When I tried to load it.When you warned above , did you also mean loading saved files?

The game crashes when you try to load save files probably for the same reason it crashes when you try to execute the scenario directly (Not through the Launcher).

Try to open the Editor first (From Options Menu), then Exit the Editor back to the Main Menu, and then try to load the Saved game again.
This may solved the problem.
So please let me know if it solved the problem.

It was reported to me that Spain doesn’t have Home City.
I have looked into it and fixed the problem, so you can re-download the scenarios if you want to play with Spain.

In fact you are probably going to like Spain even more because I Spain now have 4 decks to choose from where each deck has 43 to 44 cards.
The 4 decks are: Balanced, Economy, Military, and Naval.

The names say it all.
All decks share the 24 cards and have 19 to 20 unique cards.
The shared cards are the most common ones such as villagers, covered wagon, fort, factory, and so on.

So I think that players can find these decks more than enough to accommodate any strategy they have in mind.
Ultra_Janissary It works!

Playability: 5
Once again a stunningly good scenario by a true master of the scenario building world. I played on moderate to start and found that even then the outcome was never certain...I played the Ports...

Balance: 5
The balance at that level of play was very good... I got the feeling that on Hard this scenario would be a biotch... ;) ...Taking the buildings is SO crucial...

Creativity: 5
High marks here for creativity. The strategic objectives style of game play rocks...Again, it's SO important to take the buildings...getting gattling guns sure does help...The Indian invasion was unexpected and the waterfall aspect was a great idea...I would've never thought...

Map Design: 4
Here again...a pretty flawless design...interesting layout...though really no eye candy to speak of. One thing I found...was that the far western Indian trading post, I was unable to build on with my explorer...not certain as to why...the railroad worker was able to build it...

Story/Instructions: 5
The entire story and instructions were quite clear. No problem at all...

Additional Comments:
A truly great scenario IMHO...Guys you NEED to dl this and play...I'm currently playing the Normal and it's tougher than moderate of course but I do have the uper hand....err...for now...Hard level will undoubtedly be very difficult. Again...Thanks Moshe for a great job!

Thank you AN_Nuisance for a very favorable review.

I have made a good progress with triggers and game play ideas in the past year.
However, eye candy is still something that I need to get better at.

By the way, I have completed 3 more “Strategic Objectives” scenarios and I am planning to release them shortly after the next patch is released.

I am planning to have a contest and 1vs1 tournament with prizes for these 4 scenarios.
Just imagine how it would be to play this new game type online against other players.

I have also added a third new feature in 2 out of the 3 upcoming scenarios.
This new feature will allow players to teleport their armies behind enemy lines once they captured a sacred temple.
Teleporting armies across the map is really fun so stay tuned because there is more to come.
AN_Nuisance Nice...I look forward to it...interestingly enough...I know nothing of how to build scenarios....yet I can make really nice eye candy sections on maps...go figure lol...
Arthur85710 Excellent! I had to turn down the graphics settings for my older machine, but this is one of the best maps ever.
