Playability: 4
Every trigger, troop, and item worked as it should.
Balance: 4
It wasn't too hard, but had a decent enough challenge, that i had to use my brain.

Creativity: 3
A bit like the caves from the main aoe3 campaign
Map Design: 5
This shows that a map doesn't have to be outdoors to be beutiful, smooth movment, easy navigation, and realistic elevation changes.

Story/Instructions: 3
Instructions are pretty strait foreward, but there's little story or plot.

Additional Comments:
One of the better scenarios i've downloaded here ( and i've downloaded them all!)

The path was narrow and straightforward. But this is a scenario that takes place in a cave so there isn't too much you could have done. One of those things that you really couldn't do much to help.

Balance: 3
This scenario was a little too easy. If I had to strategize more or do more than just click on the next enemy I would have scored 'The Cave' higher here.

Creativity: 3
I was going to give you a 4 here but I realized that this scenario is rather basic. The idea that it takes place in a nicely designed cave can't change that.

Map Design: 4
You wanted to make a nice looking cave and you did. The areas outside the cave reflect the atmosphere well. So you did a good job on what you wanted to do.

Story/Instructions: 3
I would have considered giving this a 4 if you had given a reason for our mission (unless I overlooked it). Also I thought the ending was rather dissapointing. I think the ending for movies/scenarios etc is the key point. A bad ending could leave the audience with a sour taste in thier mouth, ruining what probably was good entertainment to that point. A great ending can make up for a sub-par movie/scenario and leave the consumer feeling good and thinking about that particular entertainment for some time.

Additional Comments:

Overall this was an OK scenario to play through. I can tell this was your first scenario on AOE3 and you could have spent more time on it and made it better if you wanted to but you are probably moving on to bigger and better things. From what I've saw in this one concerning your ability with triggers has guaranteed a download of your next scenario from me.

Perfectly playable, not too easy, not too hard.

Balance: 4
It was balanced fine, could have been a little more challenging, but thats fine. Id rather have 2 easy than too hard.

Creativity: 3
Not particularly creative, but flawless execution as far as i could tell.

Map Design: 4
Again, nothing too special, but fine and professionally done.

Story/Instructions: 3
Not much of a story but the instructions were clear enough.

Additional Comments:
A very nice scenario overrall, good work with the triggers, everything was timed right and seemed to work without a hitch. Cinematics were good. I also will definitely Dload your next scen if there is one.

“The Cave” is a fixed force scenario that sees the return of the Boneguard from the main AoE3 campaign and sets the player in a vicious fight against the mysteriously named Baron.

Playability:

The scenario consists of several battles with small numbers and occasionally larger numbers of Boneguard, and several sections of building destroying. This is fun on its own although towards the end of the scenario I was getting slightly bored with the repetition that was going on. I felt that some more varied and interesting challenges were needed to sustain my interest.

I found very little in the way of playability problems or bugs, although there were several instances that I thought needed fixing. One was the section with the steep incline and the wolves; after the cinematic the camera resets away from the battle and the incline is too steep to be able to see your units, and the camera cuts through the terrain, which looks very blocky and can disorientate the player. If I were you I’d either raise the level of the terrain up or set the camera angle and pitch so that the player can see their units clearly.

When the objectives were shown to the player I found that they were on display for too long a time for the amount of text they contained; often I was trying to fight battles with a big black square obscuring the view of my units.

The playability is good, but has lots of room for improvement. 3.

Balance:

As the main opposing unit was groups of Boneguard mixed in with the occasional pikeman there wasn’t much strategy required to win battles. I found that as long as I kept my Swiss Pikemen in front of my ranged units there was little danger of losing the battles. Some of the larger groups of enemies posed more of a challenge, and I probably would have lost if I’d committed all my units at once to attacking them. I would’ve liked to have seen some more unit variation in composition of the enemy groups to force the player to think more about counter-units and their unit selection.

I completed the scenario with the large majority of my force left and required no restarts. 3.

Creativity:

The general idea was different and interesting, and reminded me of the first level of the main campaign with several of the objectives, but again I felt there was room for a lot more variety and creativity with the game play. I liked the cinematics and felt they split up the game play well, and especially liked the one with the wolves charging down the slope, which was fantastic. The objectives were fine, but needed more variety or something extra to make them more interesting or challenging. 3.

Map Design:

This was one of the stronger points of the scenario. The cave was realistic, had some nice embellishments and eye-candy, although after a while it got slightly repetitive. I felt something visual was needed to spice it up a little, such as an underwater stream or something similar. The two outside areas looked good. My main point here would be to try to add more detail and maybe try to mix in some elevation in the terrain levels to add tactical elements and some more variety. 4-.

Story/Instructions:

I liked the idea of having to chase the Baron through the cave and you presented the whole package very well. The opening cinematic was lovely and had some great camera movements. The instructions were clear, to the point (although they stayed on the screen a little to long, but I won’t deduct for that here) and served their purpose well. However, the area I thought needed improving was the story and the background information. I was thrown into the battle at the start having no idea who I was, why I was after the baron or any of the history that had gone on before. This sort of information can really set the scene and get the player involved. Although there was a semblance of a storyline developing as the game progressed it didn’t expand the players knowledge very much. 3+.

Additional Comments:

This is a promising map and storyline. Well worth the download.

cmeb4uleave I was going to try a review but I will leave that to the wizards on high. I loved this scenario and have played it several times because it is enjoyable. My only complaint that no one else commented on was that after the cinematic scenes the camera zoom was left close. I don't play that way and I bet you don't either. I like as broad of view as possible to see what is coming. I haven't figured out how to change that so I'll have to zoom out after each cinematic--oh well.
