Cattle Barons Random Map Script
by Felix Hermansson, Tsunami Studios (hoodncloak@hotmail.com)
22 December 2005
On this map emphasis is on herdables: Players start with an additional livestock pen and a herd of cows. Many more cows can be found all across the map, but there are only few huntables around. Wide, open plains with six trade posts and one or two camps of Lakota or Comanche, limited wood & coin, and high gathering rates for herdables make this an extremely fast and aggressive map.
To install the map, copy both files 'Cattle Barons.xml' and 'Cattle Barons.xs' into the game folder '..\My Games\Age of Empires 3\RM' (NOT into '..\Microsoft Games\Age of Empires III\RM'!).
You can then play it both in single player or multiplayer mode by checking the 'Custom Map' box on the map selection screen and then selecting it from the pulldown menu.
Notes:
The map can be played in single player mode, but the standard AI shows some weaknesses there. (It doesn't understand that emphasis is on herdables.)
The map cannot be played 'Nomad' style; players will always start with a TC and a pen.
I would appreciate any honest feedback, good or bad. Please tell me what you liked, what you disliked, and especially, tell me why. If you have any ideas on how to improve it, all the better.
I would appreciate it even more if you did not modify this script without contacting me first.
Please send any comments or questions by e-mail to hoodncloak@hotmail.com. Oh, and add 'Age of Empires' to the subject and use proper language, otherwise your message will probably be deleted by the spam filter.
Have fun!
Felix
UPDATE, March 11 2006:
As patch 1.05 has become available I have updated this script to include a tooltip description for the map selection screen as well as a proper description for the game loading screen.

I enjoyed this game but I wasn't sure if I was supposed to save all the cattle or send them to Burger King. Finally, it was burgers or starve. I played in single player mode and didn't have any difficulties to speak of except with artillary... sometimes, they couldn't decide to shoot or hitch up to the horses and move. |

The cows are definitely for eating... ;-)
As far as the artillery goes, that has nothing to do with the random map script. This is the way the program handles them, nothing I can do there. |

UPDATE:
I've found a minor bug and updated the script accordingly. Huntables now flee properly when their herd is attacked. |

It's minor but in your .xs file you mention placing some carcasses but I don't see any. Did you forget to upload the groupings file?
Edit: Well I did find the file. I was looking in the My Docnument/AOE3/RM/groupings folder; but I still don't think it works. Still investigating.
Edit again: Never mind, I figured it out. The carcass is a patch of grass. At least I know more about groupings now.[Edited on 01/04/06 @ 03:15 PM]

I was a bit disappointed also to find the "carcass" consists of a flock of birds of prey, but I decided to keep it anyway.
The carcass grouping already existed in the game and didn't need to be added again. |

Nice open map, plenty of food available all game (its a shame that the old 80-food-no-gold-or-wood cavalry hasn't followed on to AOE3). Perhaps just a little more wood on the map would be useful - I understand that it was designed purposely that way, and I coped alright, but it seemed to be a bigger problem for the AI. My allies constantly asked for more wood, and could be the cause of the weakness of the AI mentioned in the map description. |

Thanks for the feedback! I never thought the wood could pose a problem to the AI, and I never experienced this during my own games. The main problem for the AI is definitely that it concentrates on hunting instead of collecting as many cows as possible and putting the livestock pen to good use. Anyway, glad you liked it! |
