Grenoble and French Alps Mountains

Author File Description
bgs63
File Details
Game Version: AoE3+TWC+TAD
Screenshot:
I tested here a Commercial Monopole.
You need to have at least 16 trading posts to win.
Against you, are 7 AI-players and 6 AI-natives.
Even if minor natives cannot populate, they can do
more damage if you walk near them.
You evoluate inside French Alps Mountains, around Grenoble (Winter Olympic Games 1968) where snowed summits and deep valleys have lot of surprises.
You are here Player 1. To be Player 2 to 8, try other scenarios stored on my site at
http://www.astrobgs.dyndns.org/aoe3_TAD/
More detailed infos with screenshots on that scenario and real geographic names are located on
http://www.astrobgs.dyndns.org/aoe3_TAD/Grenoble/
Have fun with this larger 600x600 map.

Playability: 4
The playability was pretty fair. Only reason for the 4 is because it was a mite crowded, which a lot of people don't like.

Balance: 5
Balance was good, what you'd expect from a regular skirmish. Some Indians attacked early on but if you can't stop their little rushes, then maybe aoe3 isn't the best game for you.

Creativity: 3
Can't say much about the creativity. It was just a regular skirmish-like map against several others players. The object of the game was to collect so many TPs, so it was a bit more interesting.

Map Design: 4
Map design was good. Not any glitches, at least not from what I saw. I give it a 3 because the mountains made it kind of hard to see, even if you could travel over them. another reason is because it was a bit crowded by the trees.

Story/Instructions: 5
No story, but the instructions told exactly what to do.

Additional Comments:
All in all, this was a fun game. NOTE: If you aren't into long skirmish games, this is not your cup of tea. It lasted longer than I would've liked, but was a great idea. The only thing I didn't like about it was the mountain idea. And even the mountains weren't so bad but it was a little hard to see and stuff. Good Job, bgs63. I think you're a good map designer and Im going to be watching your future games to come out ;)

Thank you crazykid for your comments and rating.
I will use your remarks for my next scenario.
Sure the mountains are difficult to let the game playable, but I'm born in around high mountains (Grenoble) and live today in another region with mountains in the middle of France.
I'll take care the next time to let them at an acceptable level.
Thank a lot for your remarks.

crazykid NO no, dont get me wrong about the mountains. I liked them. But I prefer if you use them as "walkways" as in create them so you have to walk in between them to get to the other cities and resources, instead of being able to travel across them. I actually was like "cool" when I saw that you used mountains, but it was kind of hard doing battle on top of mountains lol. BUT I did enjoy being able to build on top of mountains lol.

Dont take away mountains, please. There arent many good mountain maps out there, my only suggestion would be to use the mountains as "walkways". That way you could maybe do map control, etc. Is it hard to make it where the mountains can't be walked on, or do you just change the altitude?

Btw, you speak french, too? Your English isn't bad at all. Tell me if there is something in my posts you don't understand. I am learning Spanish and I know how it is to not understand words ;)

Playability: 3
I had an issue mentioned earlier on the playability related to the lack of room to build. I also agree that while the Alps are of course naturally high, possibly toning them down a bit in the game would be helpful.

Balance: 4
The balance was fine for me. Nothing too overwhelming to stop and at the same time this is where the terrain differences created chokepoints which added to the challenge.

Creativity: 3
I'm basing a lot of the creativity on the map because otherwise there isn't much to go on. Without a storyline or objectives it's just a big skirmish map...which is ok as far as that goes..I love skirmishes...but as a scenario it just gets an average rating for creativity.

Map Design: 3
While the basic layout is ok, actually pretty good...it just had for me the 2 glaring issues....too extreme of map elevations making it tough to see and causing a weird effect of building a building in a truly impossible location on top of the Alps....and the crowdedness of the map.

Story/Instructions:2
I always hate to rate on story as most scenarios that come out lose a lot on their rating by really having no story. The instructions are basic but there's nothing to why we are here, why we are doing what we are doing, or really anything else about the map and the combatants. Adding a little tale on the background would bump your rating up! And it's easy to do! I was bit surprised that you got a perfect score on the story/instructions from the reviewer above, but hey...everyone has their own point of view!

Additional Comments:
Totally worth the dl and from the involvement of work evident on this map, I'm sure we'll be seeing some great scenarios in the future...fun...though pretty long.
