At the dawn of the 19th century, four different explorers found themselves in the bowels of the vast mazelike Meramec Caverns in eastern Missouri. Around them in the stifling, fetid dark lay untold wealth, the very cache of Hades himself.
Bereft of all reason by the toxic atmosphere, inspired to voracious greed, unable to find a way out to the surface, the four explorers battled to their mutual deaths over these riches while aboveground, word of their disappearance began its slow journey east.
Even now, as covered wagons cross the rolling hills and glades overhead, as the railroad winds westward not a mile from the hidden entrance, the four adventurers are locked in deadly battle. Some say the great earthquake of St. Louis owed its start to the fall of one of these great underground forts. The resources are long spent, perhaps they perished long ago and their mortal flesh stripped away, but these four men continue tooth and nail, hand and fist.
