Author File Description
Felix Hermansson Rainforest Random Map Script (Updated January 1)

by Felix Hermansson, Tsunami Studios (hoodncloak@hotmail.com)
24 December 2005

This huge map provides the players with an abundance of resources and treasures, but the dense forest also makes moving around difficult, especially for bigger armies. There is no trade route, but up to six hidden Tupi or Carib villages. Players and natives are placed randomly, so scouting is essential here!

To install the map, copy both files 'Rainforest.xml' and 'Rainforest.xs' into the game folder '..\My Games\Age of Empires 3\RM' (NOT into '..\Microsoft Games\Age of Empires III\RM'!).

You can then play it both in single player or multiplayer mode by checking the 'Custom Map' box on the map selection screen and then selecting it from the pulldown menu.

Note: It takes much longer to build this map than it does for most others, due to its size and the huge number of objects. So don't restart your computer just because the status bar remains at 80% for a while!

I would appreciate any honest feedback, good or bad. Please tell me what you liked, what you disliked, and especially, tell me why. If you have any ideas on how to improve it, all the better.

I would appreciate it even more if you did not modify this script without contacting me first.

Please send any comments or questions by e-mail to hoodncloak@hotmail.com. Oh, and add 'Age of Empires' to the subject and use proper language, otherwise your message will probably be deleted by the spam filter.

Have fun!
Felix

UPDATE, March 11 2006:
As patch 1.05 has become available I have updated this script to include a tooltip description for the map selection screen as well as a proper description for the game loading screen.

This RMS not-only Deserves to be rated, it deserves the five stars I’m giving it.

This is without question one of the Two Finest RM’s I have, love & use repeatedly – (the other being Gandalf’s Giant RLM).

I simply love everything about this R-Map.
Above all, I think – the trees! ..plentiful, plentiful trees! In truth however, there is a wealth of everything on these maps. Very resource rich – plentiful game, mines, Native villages, Treasures, land area and, of course, never any shortage of wood!

The need to ‘fell timber’ and ‘clear the land’ for proper settlement makes this really my Favorite type of map of all time, and Felix has done a beautiful job with this one in every respect.

There are even the little scattered pools of water of varying sizes – all very naturally amorphous.
The ‘eye candy’ elements are just perfect, being neither overly-done, nor constrained by any sheepish ‘conservatism.’

The Audio which goes with the rainforest in AoE III is really delightful as well – and in so dense a rainforest as Felix affords us here, it just adds ineffably to the immersion factor.
When one thinks (however ‘romantically’) of the 16th-18th century European exploration of the Central and South Americas, one conjures images very closely resembling this lovely RMS. The wilderness which holds untold treasures, risks, dangers, and promises…

Needless to say, tho’ I will add… This is genuinely pleasurable to Settle and fight on as well; adding numberless challenges one simply will not find on any other Map area (that I’m aware of at-least).

Exceptionally well done Felix, and I am most grateful for your generous sharing of your conscientious and skillful efforts with this one. It is a treat…

Cheers!
