Land Unknown

Author File Description
Felix Hermansson Land Unknown Random Map Script

by Felix Hermansson, Tsunami Studios (hoodncloak@hotmail.com)
31 December 2005

Snow, grass, or sand? Different landscapes, varying resources, and random placement of players, natives, and even trade routes make this large map truly random. There are no oceans, but apart from that, just about everything is possible! Are you ready to go exploring?

This map features:
- three different basic map types (snow, grass, or sand)
- randomized landscapes (lakes, cliffs, etc.)
- varying resources & treasures
- randomized player placement
- randomized trade route with varying number of trade posts
- up to six native villages
- four different native tribes

WARNING:
Due to the randomized placement of just about everything, this map has the potential to be somewhat "unfair". However, the script is not completely random; there are rules to make sure players start out on a more or less equal footing. So maps will not be created in a way that leaves a player without a proper chance (e.g. because almost all resources are located much closer to the enemy), but don't expect to find all natives or treasures at exactly the same distance from the players. Good scouting is essential here!

To install the map, copy both files 'Land Unknown.xml' and 'Land Unknown.xs' into the game folder '..\My Games\Age of Empires 3\RM' (NOT into '..\Microsoft Games\Age of Empires III\RM'!).

You can then play it both in single player or multiplayer mode by checking the 'Custom Map' box on the map selection screen and then selecting it from the pulldown menu.

I would appreciate any honest feedback, good or bad. Please tell me what you liked, what you disliked, and especially, tell me why. If you have any ideas on how to improve it, all the better.

I would appreciate it even more if you did not modify this script without contacting me first.

Please send any comments or questions by e-mail to hoodncloak@hotmail.com. Oh, and add 'Age of Empires' to the subject and use proper language, otherwise your message will probably be deleted by the spam filter.

Have fun!
Felix

UPDATE, March 11 2006:
As patch 1.05 has become available I have updated this script to include a tooltip description for the map selection screen as well as a proper description for the game loading screen.

UPDATE, May 27 2006:
As patch 1.07 has become available I have updated this script to include the 'Unknown' background for the map selection screen as well as for the game loading screen. The map itself has not been changed.

UPDATE:

I've found a minor bug and updated the script accordingly. Huntables now flee properly when their herd is attacked, I forgot to put that in before.
V01ture Very nice, I had fun playing it! Great job.

Great! Certainly one of the best random map I've seen so far for AoE3, simply because it really is random. I especially like the trade route which looks different every time you play. Forcing the players to actually search for the enemy instead of simply walking straight across the map is also a huge improvement compared to ES's standard maps.

The maps may not always be perfectly balanced, but so far I've never come across one I'd really call unfair. I think this little imbalances just add to the fun and make the games more interesting.

Personally, I'd like to have more resources on the map, but maybe that's just me.

One point you might want to improve on is the map design, large parts of the map feel sometimes a bit empty. Still, this one is definitely a 5!

Thanks for the rating and for the positive feedback (that goes for VOlture too)! Glad you two liked it!

It's true that the map may sometimes look a bit empty, it depends on the number of resources placed. Due to the randomized placement the script cannot guarantee that there are no empty spaces.

Quite nicely done. it's nice to not already 'know' exactly what the map will be before you play.

Additional Comments:Now, can you do something about the weak AI?? 8-)!!

I've got an improved AI in the pipeline, but there's no telling when I find the time to properly work on that.
In the meantime, try beating the expert AI in a 1 vs. 7 game with 100% handicap... ;-)

This map should have been included with the
original game. You can play this one over and
over and it's always changing.
One of my favorites.

Thanks!

I'm still waiting for that call from ES... ;-)
SgtSheriff i cant get the map to work ive downloaded and put the 2 files in the correct folder but when i go on game it just says no custom maps loaded can you help me?

If you copied the files into the correct folders you should see the custom maps. However, the path given above is valid for the original AoE3 game only. For TWC and TAD you have to use the folders '..\My Games\Age of Empires 3\RM2' and '..\My Games\Age of Empires 3\RM3' respectively.

Note that there is an updated TWC version of this map available as part of my TWC map pack at
