Hi, I'm SharpShooter99: Creator in 2006's Omaha and Utah Beach and the AoE3 WW2 Campaign. I've come back to create a new and complete campaign: The Great War. Check out the thread for my Campaign here: http://aoe3.heavengames.com/cgi-bin/forums/display.cgi?action=ct&f=12,36076,,10
World War One left France in a state of shock--never wanting to join another massive war again. They said this battle was the reason why France pulled out so quickly from World War Two, not even giving a try to mobilize their forces against the Blitzkrieg army. France lost so much men in World War One, that they cannot afford to lose more people in this Second World War and gave in to Hitler. Creating NAZI France and Vichy France.
The Battle of Verdun is considered the greatest and lengthiest in world history. Never before or since has there been such a lengthy battle, involving so many men, situated on such a tiny piece of land. The battle, which lasted from 21 February 1916 until 19 December 1916 caused over an estimated 700,000 casualties (dead, wounded and missing). The battlefield was not even a square ten kilometres. From a strategic point of view there can be no justification for these atrocious losses. The battle degenerated into a matter of prestige of two nations literally for the sake of fighting......
France did win this battle. |

This has been Updated--Thanks. Hopefully it'll work.
Do not give this a low review based on unbalanced forces and a "impossible scenario". This is beatable--I only beat it three times. It's that hard. Try to protect your falconets and culverins. [Edited on 12/03/08 @ 12:36 AM]

Wow this was not an easy scenario. I almost beat this thing however just at the end a bunch of grenadiers flanked me, and got my coulervans (I probably misspelled that:P). So nothing was stopping the artillery from just mowing down my last few infantry. Luckily I actually remembered to save. So later I will try again. |

Playability: 4
This map was entertaining to play, but you lose a point here because just sitting back and defending can get boring. It took me an hour to complete this scenario and it got kind of old after 30 minutes.
Balance: 5
This game was very much tilted in favour of the Germans, but reinforcements arrived at just the right moments, and those pillboxes really helped even the odds.
Creativity: 5
First scenario of this type I've played. You did an excellent job in basing a WWI scenario in a game of musket and cannon. I also liked your Artillery bombardment at certain parts.
Map Design: 5
Your trench system was very... very nice. Beats the one in a scenario I made (never posted) by a long shot! Also, even though the player couldn't see it, you decorated the German part of the map very nicely.
Story/Instructions: 5
Not much to say here, the objective was made very clear, defend the town. Your messages via overlay also helped to add a certain character to the instructions.
Additional Comments:
All in all, a very enjoyable scenario. It may take you several tries to beat it, but take heart in the fact that the French had just as much trouble as you did during the real battle.
Perhaps the biggest issue is that the Trenches easily get clogged by the massive amount of troops that are provided to you as reinforcements. Also, those with slower computers will likely experience some lag, due to the large quantities of troops (at one point I had over 1000 population) and the Rain that starts at a certain point.
I highly recomend this scenario. |

Hey, great job. And if you have the time after part 2 is finished, I would love to sea the British invasion of the Ottoman Empire in the world's first amphibious assault. I forget the actual name of the battle (It was near the Dardanelles though). This was also in WWI.
I would make it, but my Scenario design skills aren't nearly what yours are, and I don't want to take an idea that fits your Great War campaign so nicely![Edited on 12/06/08 @ 09:14 PM]

Thanks for the review.
I'm surprised you beat it already. And about the playability deduction--I thought it was going to be hard enough to keep you busy and not bored(despite the fact that you might have to replay it again to beat it) but that's why I added the artillery and gas attack effects to entertain the player while he's defending.
And also the trenches being clogged. At first they wouldn't be clogged because your still trying to develop a strategy. They will come with cannons and just mow down your guys in the trenches so it won't be that congested. But since you beat it and have constructed a strategy, you conserved your troops to a certain population for the trenches to get overloaded.
And yeah, about the Ottoman attack (Battle of Gallipoli) I'm already working on it but thanks for your thoughts in helping me with my campaign!
It's not really done yet--no where close but I did add some eye candy. Look at these screen shots:

Ok sorry took so long to review I'll get to it now.
Playability: 5
It was playable. I saw no problems with triggers or sounds or anything else.
Balance: 5
If you didn't intend this to be very hard you wounldn't have gotten such a high mark here. Either way I like challengeing scenarios. Only played it one time and almost beat it. I was doing extreamly well I even had seven cuverlans left at the end. Just I made a fatal mistake and all brought all my army in one spot near Verdun. Some grenadiers destroyed all seven canons at once. So heres a tip. Try and hold the front line, and never retreat back to Verdun :P.
Creativity: 5
Loved the artillery fireing. Those sounds that came along with it were a great idea. I would suggest useing this idea again.
Map Design: 5
Once again great map design. Its even better this time because the trenches are wider and it isn't a pain to navigate rienforcements to their positions.
Story/Instructions: 5
I'm not going to hurt your review because of no story twice. So you get a five. Instructions were easy to follow. Just not so easy to carry out lol.
Additional Comments: I'm not sure how the other reviewer got bored playing this I know I didn't. I had to be very carefull of what I was doing the whole time. I think that the Ottoman attack is a great idea. It can give fans a break from the trench warfare. You know just in case this starts to get repitive. So good luck.

The best defence is a good offence, or in here, spawn killing. Hopefully you remove this if you do patch it, another this is that the enemy sometimes (20% of the time) ignore your units and continue walking by, or just stand there. Other than those two there were no major bugs.
Balance: 5
A good diffuculty for this scenario, finished it on the first try :)
Creativity: 3
Basically enemy spawns and runs toward you, you fight them, you get more men, they get more men. Basic. EDIT: quoting you "The spawning and killing was so repetitive that it was annoying."
Map Design: 5
The best part of this scenario, many eye candy, music fits the game, trenches, artillery, etc.
Story/Instructions: 4
Story was not told in depth, basicaly just defend. Intro cinematic was nicely done.
Additional Comments:
Best single player scenario i've seen so far :)[Edited on 12/08/08 @ 07:08 PM]
