King of the Unknown

Author File Description
Felix Hermansson King of the Unknown Random Map Script

by Felix Hermansson, Tsunami Studios (hoodncloak@hotmail.com)
20 January 2006

This is a highly randomized King of the Hill style map with a circular trade route located in the center. Once a player controls all trading posts along this route, a victory counter is started. If the counter hits 0 before at least two of the trading posts have been destroyed, the player controlling the posts wins the game!

Different landscapes, varying resources, and random placement of players make this large map truly random. There are no oceans, but apart from that, just about anything is possible! Are you ready to go exploring?

This map features:
- three different basic map types (snow, grass, or sand)
- randomized landscapes (lakes, cliffs, etc.)
- varying resources & treasures
- randomized player placement
- two different startup configurations

The map cannot be played 'Nomad' style. Instead, selecting 'Nomad' from the game menu will result in a different startup configuration, where players start with additional barracks and two outposts (except for the Russians who get two blockhouses instead).

The map can be played as a team game, even though this does not make sense for a King of the Hill style game. For a team to win, one of its members has to control the trade route. Having several members of the team control all trading posts will not start the counter!

IMPORTANT NOTES:
Due to the randomized placement of just about everything, this map has the potential to be somewhat "unfair". However, the script is not completely random; there are rules to make sure players start out on a more or less equal footing. So maps will not be created in a way that leaves a player without a proper chance (e.g. because almost all resources are located much closer to the enemy), but don't expect to find all treasures at exactly the same distance from the players. Good scouting is essential here!

The map can be played in single player mode, but since the standard game AI does not know how to play King of the Hill style games this is pretty pointless. This map is for all-human multiplayer games!

To install the map, copy both files 'King of the Unknown.xml' and 'King of the Unknown.xs' into the game folder '..\My Games\Age of Empires 3\RM' (NOT into '..\Microsoft Games\Age of Empires III\RM'!).

You can then play it by checking the 'Custom Map' box on the map selection screen and then selecting it from the pulldown menu.

I would appreciate any honest feedback, good or bad. Please tell me what you liked, what you disliked, and especially, tell me why. If you have any ideas on how to improve it, all the better.

I would appreciate it even more if you did not modify this script without contacting me first.

Please send any comments or questions by e-mail to hoodncloak@hotmail.com. Oh, and add 'Age of Empires' to the subject and use proper language, otherwise your message will probably be deleted by the spam filter.

Have fun!
Felix

UPDATE, March 11 2006:
As patch 1.05 has become available I have updated this script to include a tooltip description for the map selection screen as well as a proper description for the game loading screen.

UPDATE, May 27 2006:
As patch 1.07 has become available I have updated this script to include the 'Unknown' background for the map selection screen as well as for the game loading screen. The map itself has not been changed.
