This is my first scenerio....please rate it!
Good Luck...there are a lot of Russians....
Note- There is not a lot of eyecandy on this map. This is truthful to history as there was not a lot of things other then grass, men, horses, and cannon in "The Valley of Death".
Also Note- Your computer might have problems running this scenerio. I have gotten rid of all the triggers to eleminate some of the problem it used to have.
The Charge of the Light Brigade
Alfred, Lord Tennyson
1.
Half a league, half a league,
Half a league onward,
All in the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.
"Forward, the Light Brigade!
"Charge for the guns!" he said:
Into the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.
2.
"Forward, the Light Brigade!"
Was there a man dismay'd?
Not tho' the soldier knew
Someone had blunder'd:
Their's not to make reply,
Their's not to reason why,
Their's but to do and die:
Into the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.
3.
Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them,
Cannon in front of them
Volley'd and thunder'd;
Storm'd at with shot and shell,
Boldly they rode and well,
Into the jaws of Death,
Into the mouth of Hell
Rode the six hundred.
4.
Flash'd all their sabres bare,
Flash'd as they turn'd in air,
Sabring the gunners there,
Charging an army, while
All the world wonder'd:
Plunged in the battery-smoke
Right thro' the line they broke;
Cossack and Russian
Reel'd from the sabre stroke
Shatter'd and sunder'd.
Then they rode back, but not
Not the six hundred.
5.
Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them,
Cannon behind them
Volley'd and thunder'd;
Storm'd at with shot and shell,
While horse and hero fell,
They that had fought so well
Came thro' the jaws of Death
Back from the mouth of Hell,
All that was left of them,
Left of six hundred.
6.
When can their glory fade?
O the wild charge they made!
All the world wondered.
Honor the charge they made,
Honor the Light Brigade,
Noble six hundred.

Playability: 1
Bad lag. Very bad lag running a fairly high end system. Not really a fun fight, there were just too many units in a confined space.
Balance: 2
While I gained alot of ground, the "slow knife fight" aspect and lag just finally made me quit. Yes there was a large difference in forces during this battle of the Crimean War, but it's too unbalanced for play. Could be scaled back, while still preserving the challenge of being outnumbered.
Creativity: 3
Good thinking of this lost piece of history.
Map Design: 2
Description was right, the battlefield was/is very open and bland but there is more to the terrain than a single channel.
Story/Instructions: 4
The history is there, so there's plenty of info on the story.
Additional Comments:
Thanks for making the map. It's a really good idea that just needs some polishing. I'm thinking right off, if your troop numbers are based an actual historical record, try scaling it back to a 1:10 ratio or something more managable. There's really just too many units on screen to work with in the space allowed.
One other note that I thought was funny. One unit I highlighted said "Si" (spanish) I've seen this in other maps I've played. Just thought it was funny since the battle was fought by Russians, Ottoman Turks, Brits and Austrailians. :)

I am so very upset with this... NOT you!! AOE3!! I really love big battles like this but there was a lot of lag because by doing your best to make it more realistic, there were too many men, apparently.
The game kept crashing on me... I tried three times but each time, I got that nasty little Microsoft XP message telling me that AOE "...had encountered problems and must close."
Boooooooooo, AOE!
Thank you very much for the effort!!! Keep trying! |

yeah, I don't know if it's the AOE engine, XP, or just technology in general. that's the brick wall but it bugs me the same way. I like to have huge forces and smash things to pieces but seems like the only way to get away with it in RTS games is with superweapons or something. |

I had to take out most of the other things I had in it to get it to the point where it was. My computer also lagged while testing it and I don't think I should have added the Cossacs on the Russians side. Before that the lag was less of a lag then it is currently...maybe I should work on the scenerio and make it better. Well for a first time I think it was pretty good. Hopefully the other scenerios I am working on will be better....and have less of a lag:)[Edited on 02/21/06 @ 09:11 PM]

Hey Mr. Emperor... it's NO reflection on you at all. GREAT effort!! Other games can handle the big numbers but for some reason the AOE series of games never has done it with consistant success.
Sure, you could take out some/all of the cossacks but then do you delete it from Tennyson's verse as well?? 8-)
It should MORE be up to ES to put some effort into providing a game that can take larger numbers... Total War series comes to mind. |

True, but if they made it more like the total warseris of games then the graphics wouldn't be as good. I mean seriusly...the graphics on teh Total War units pretty much suck, especially when compared to AOE3's graphics... |

That's the truth. AoE has great graphics this go around, it just can't handle the numbers. I tried playing total war, and it was just too ugly for me. I still think this was a great effort though. |

Well hopefully my next scenerio will be easier for computers to cope with.
Total War is fun though...the shere numbers of units make it very intresting....I once had a battle on the older Medieval: Total War in which I had 14000 units and my enemy had 12000...I lost it but it was really fun. |

Playability: 3
this can be developed more to make it more enjoyable
Balance: 3
its hard to make this type of scenario because of the reality of the situation, there was no real balance in the battle nor should their be in the game.
Creativity: 3
good idea that just needs a little more work, keep at it and try different things to liven up the game play without causing lag
Map Design: 3
nice job, middle of the road
Story/Instructions: 3
ok, but the lag issue makes it hard to follow everything
Additional Comments:
I'd say keep at it and this will get better.

Playability: 1
(it was too laggy to play, probbably because of large numbers)
Balance: 2
(its not balanced as expected, it makes the scenario considered as a cinematic)
Creativity: 5
(idea is realy good, one of the most heroic wars ever happened)
Map Design: 3
(could be better but its ok)
Story/Instructions: 1
(it seemed to be a scene rather than a story and i dont know if there is any instructions cause i couldnt play it because of lag)
600 were ottoman:
there is one big mistake about this scenerio: the supposed light brigade is english. ottoman empire was allied with english in the crimean war and recent studies shows that the charge of the light brigade was ottoman and the english governement just made some arrangements and changed the reality to create a public opinion promiting the war towards russian.
actually only 120 english soldier were dead. pity for the poem its an orphan now.
