I opened up way too slow, starting my age up at ~3:15 because I gathered wood in discovery so I could get my posts up fast enough. Much to my dismay, kevin_killer pulled a 12 CDB age up and hit colonial a good 30-40 seconds before me. Luckily, my pre-transition wood gathering wager paid off and I had my 8 natives out before he had a single military unit on the field. I didn't get any villagers and the harassment was rather minimal but the psychological impact of getting native rushed seemed to keep him from advancing to my base. Of course, all went according to plan and he massed muskets to counter my pseudo-native rush which were easy to push back with my age-up cassadores. Upon my fortressing, he follows suit and then uses the power of early fortress french power to push me back and put a damper on my economy. What happens next truly exemplifies the power of heavy cavalry, especially in Portugal's hands.
