This is a recorded game of me playing Portugal against a Dutch player. Here I utilize the ubiquitous Portuguese Water Turtle, though best suited against the Ottoman Rush, against a Dutch opponent.
The most useful thing you will notice me do is use the market early on and upgrade hunting dogs. After I start aging, I sell 100 food and buy 100 wood; since I am a low level, aging with 500 food allows me to use the food, sell some of it for gold, thereby for wood, and get what I need for victory. Note also how I do not need to claim the water as fast because I see he doesn't have any boat shipments. I allow him to think he has map control, and I myself lose some villagers to raiding, but make up for it in no time. However, since I have towers (using the Cheap Tower Card and Schooners allows for early tower buildup, plus 700 wood card), he is unwilling to attack and ultimately is quite at a loss at what to do. I build up walls and he, I suppose at this time, will build up cannons and attack. I manage my sea economy, and use my free warships well, while he does not try and shake my boom. Note also that against the Dutch, I scare him purposefully by aging up fast, and thereafter aging quickly to Industrial to make him attack.
Overall, I out-boom him, and trick him into splitting his forces when I send 6 Petards against his Fort and 2 against his Town center, with 8 Hussars afterward, into sending his Ruyters back to defeat my raiding. I then was easily able to destroy his cannons and other units with my Dragoons, Guerrerios, and Culverins. He resigns, and I am victorious.
Thus, I overestimated his skill of play, and he had few units to counter me.
