Story- Africa is being divided by the European powers whose intense rivalry affects the stability of the entire continent. A 1500 strong British battalion, ordered to begin the invasion of Zululand, were attacked and defeated by 30,000 Zulus. The Zulu now push towards a British mission station at Rorke's Drift, determined to stop Britain's acquisition of Southern Africa. You take charge of defending Rorke's Drift before the walls are breached.
Installation-
Place the RorkesDrift.age3scn file into 'my documents/my games/age of empires 3/scenario'.
Gameplay-
Protect your cannon and medics, while making sure your engineers (Coureurs) wall any gaps. Wood supplies are limited.
Gate Feature-
To open/close the gate simply select one of the two gate parts (You need to select the gate/wall for a second to get it to work).
Difficulty Selection-
After a few minutes an option window will appear. Selecting MODERATE increases the possibility of victory. HARD is more of a challenge.
2017 edit- This is not a mod, it's just a scenario, so doesn't require any additional files/mods. Also works with Steam version of The War Chiefs. |

Playability: 5
(Everything worked just as it should. I experienced no lag with settings on very high. Nothing makes me happier than to play a scenario with my gfx at full to see the beauty of the game. The trigger work was not spectacular, but all worked without fail, and I feel that's more important. Overall, very fun. Only complaint, was that the scenario seemed a little short.)
Balance: 4
(On hard setting, the balance seemed leaned a little towrds the enemy, but not bad. On Moderate setting, the balance was clearly on the players side. I found the moderate setting to be a little too easy. I was able to find and destroy the Zulu leader with the forces I had without having to create any new ones.)
Creativity: 5
(The gate idea was especially cool. Great idea there. I also enjoyed the necessity for protecting the engineers and medics in order to succeed. Both of those elements helped to bring this scenario above average.)
Map Design: 4
(The fort was very cool and I liked the attention to terrain elevation throughout the map. Terrain paint and embellishment was lacking, but I suppose that fits the African lands anyway, but still felt a little plain. I think that a better placement of the Zulu camp was in order. Spoiler edited out.)
Story/Instructions: 5
(I don't know much about the history of the Zulu wars, but I don't care. The scripting explained everything fine and the gameplay makes the player feel a sense of urgency. I knew exactly what I needed to do to survive. All objectives were clear.)
Additional Comments:
Great fun. You have a natural talent it seems. I look forward to seeing more from you. I recommend this scenario to anyone.[Edited on 08/26/06 @ 06:26 PM]

Nice game play, however I found this scenario to be too short for my taste.
There was also no need to build up.
When I played the hard version I couldn’t survive the initial attack.
When I moved to play moderate, I managed to have 15 units left.
I then used them to attack the village and kill the enemy leader.
However, I didn’t train additional units, and even didn’t progress to colonial.
It would probably worked better if the second phase would have been be more challenging where the enemy’s village is well defended, and we the players have to build a large army in order to have successes with the second phase.
Balance: 4
Balance is good for the first phase but too easy (on moderate, and probably on hard too) on the second phase.
Creativity: 5
Very nice scenario, especially the gate that opens and closes – very original.
Map Design: 4
Nice map design.
2 difficulty level I also a nice feature.
Story/Instructions: 5
Very nice story and good instructions.
Additional Comments:
I liked it how the scenario started, and I would have liked it better if the game turned into a skirmish type game after the initial attack.

Playability and Balance: 8/10
Great fun to play this, you are plunged straight into battle and it is a race to get everyone inside the fort. There is plenty of micro to be getting on with, especially with surgeons making in an attempt to keep as many alive as possible! On moderate it is a little too easy to hold out while hard I could not cope with the last wave of attacks. Balance is still pretty good
The second part of the mission is a little flat in comparison to the initial siege, for me it was a bit of a chanse around the map finding the Zulu groups one by one eventually coming to Cetshwayo. In comparison to the amazing start I felt the end didn't quite match up.
Creativity and Map Design: 9/10
Rorke's Drift looks fantastic, the wagon, the walls, and the neat gate trick are all brilliant. Although not perfectly historically accurate this is as pretty much as good as anyone could do in the game. It's size and layout makes it a lot of fun to play. The surrounding rolling countryside is also well deisgned, quite simple but effective and similar to the grasslands of South Africa. Very creative and well designed.
Story/Instructions: 4/5
A story I am personally very fond of, the map also offers excelent instructions. I know what the aim of the map is and to have some of the story attached is great. Easily deserves 4/5 here.
Additional Comments: A really great map, recommend it to anyone. Isandlwana will be amzing if done to the same standard!
Also I hope you are not disappointed by the slightly lower scores, these for me indicate that the map is truly excelent. A 5 in any section indciates near perfection!

I am new to this and this is my first custom scenario download but I am sure I will get the hang of it sooner or later?
Balance: 3
As above only I don't know what to put here as I don't know what is meant by balance?
Creativity: 5
What can I say except - just how do you do that because it's excellent?
Map Design: 5
Very cleverly mapped out and designed and once again - how the hell do you do that?
Story/Instructions: 5
Easy to understand although being new to this, it will take time but simplicity itself really.
Additional Comments:
I really must get some more of these custom scenarios and RM's? They make the game so much more enjoyable and playable!

I absolutly loved this scenario and it is the best I have ever played. I love the movie Zulu and after trying to create my own scenario a while ago (and failing might I add) this was an amazing game to play.
Balance: 4
It was in the favour of the Zulu's I think. But I didn't care. It was such a hard challenge. After holding out for a good while the Zulu's stormed in and massacared me. And I've never had so much fun losing! It was so fun to struggle for my life.
Creativity: 5
Well, you couldn't be to creative in this. So these are more for historical accuracy. Obviously you couldn't keep the same numbers as 4,000 Zulu warriors is just unfeasable. However I thought that the numbers accurately represented the struggle at Rorkes Drift.
Map Design: 5
I liked the base, it was well made with the door and everything. It had the cattle and everything. I found it most enjoyable to play in.
Story/Instructions: 5
The story seemed to accurately reflect the happenings of Rorkes Drift and were very easy to follow.
Additional Comments:
I absolutly loved it.
I did promise to redo the review months ago, sorry for the wait but here it is.
Downloaded the game again and can't wait to play it.[Edited on 06/30/07 @ 01:15 PM]

Was alright I suppose was a bit boring just stuck in one place. Wouldn't play it again.
Balance: 2
The place i was protecting eventually got over-run and destroyed but the game didn't end (think i just had the market left) only just completed it with 1 military unit left amost dead.
Creativity: 2
Not really that creative... you're basically defending a position and then you go kill someone.
Map Design: 2
The base was really small and cramped, had difficulty moving units around inside. The rest of the map was a bit plain, boring and wasn't being used for any reason... (well exept to search for the tribe leader in)
Story/Instructions: 2
Not a very interesting story but instructions were solid and i knew what i had to do.
Additional Comments:
Really wasn't my cup of tea, I think your presentation of the map is the best part. Kept me busy for a few minutes though.
Maybe i'm being a bit harsh and just talking about the points of this map i didn't like. That's how most of my reviews are even if i really liked the map :P
The gate was fun, didn't work as smoothly as i had hoped, taking a while to open/close and not opening at all sometimes. |
