Fifth Mission

In this mission, there are seemingly great armies but as the introduction says, they are turncoats.

Again at start, queue villagers to gather resources and collect the stray treasures with Kichiro and Tokugawa. Build a few shrines. Start moving your initial troops in the village to the east along with Kichiro and Tokugawa, bring the coin rickshaw along. You’ll soon see some enemies, amongst them some Hatamoto samurai, which you should try to hit and run. Remember Kichiro’s special attack! Destroy the outpost and head further along the road.

Don’t produce a lot of units, you should get enough shipments. Do build villagers, though. This will allow you to go up as soon as possible. Your opponent will do so as well, so try to keep up with him. Take out the defenders in the enemy village and send your coin rickshaw to the area marked with blue flags – you’ll gain control of the village and even more importantly, get 3 ninjas. Now you should send most of your army to this village, leaving only a skeleton crew to the trading post area.

If you scout around the village a bit, you’ll receive a mission about assassinating Daimyo Otani. Now who could think of a better job for the 3 ninjas you just got? Put them on stealth and have them move to Otani’s position without attacking anyone along the route. (You might be tempted to send just one ninja, but the game apparently doesn’t know of the inverse ninja law, so send all three.) In the meantime, claim the treasure in the village to get a stable rickshaw – build it in your original village. When you’re up, send Naginata rider shipments from your homecity. The enemy will use a lot of Yumi archers, so they should be a mainstay in your army. You can build more units too, but concentrate on improving your economy and getting to Industrial age. Once the ninjas arrive at his location, attack the Daimyo, and the daimyo alone. After he’s dead, his army crumbles into bits, fighting amongst themselves.

This gives your army in the eastern village a good chance to go to the castle in the center of the map. Start damaging the castle – don’t bother killing the units. Those units, along with a great many other troops and buildings change sides again – now you control all but Ishida’s troops. Backtrack to your home village, retreat with the units in the northern parts of the map so you won’t lose them to Ishida’s masses. Start gathering more troops and upgrade them. Yumi archers and Naginata riders is a good combination of units. When you damaged the castle, you also obtained 4 moutaru units. Keep them safe and you can take out all of his buildings at range.

Mass more units near the two castles you obtained and get ready for the final push. You’ll eventually have to fight his great amount of Yumi archers, but if you’ve massed some Naginata riders, you’ll have no trouble dealing with them. Hatamoto samurai will be a threat, so don’t neglect Yumi archers either. Keep pushing with your army and train more units from the buildings you captured recently. Once Ishida’s castle goes down, a bunch of Hatamoto samurai will attack you but by now, nothing Ishida throws at your army should be a problem for you.

Congratulations, you’ve finished the Japanese campaign – now on to China!
