Aztec Units

The Army is unique compared to many of the other civilizations; they have no mounted units. The tags on the Aztec’s units can be confusiong at times, so let me clear that up. As of TWC, coyote runners are considered Light Infantry, a sort of psuedo cavalry, as are eagle knights as well. Heavy infantry shows a bonus against light infantry, and this refers to coyote runners and the like. The Aztecs have many melee units with differing jobs, but many share general functions. The Aztec military is different to the other civilizations also in that it is comprised of two tiers in a hierarchy. The weaker units avaiable in the Colonial Age are trained from the War Hut, and the more powerful Aztec knights can be trained from the Nobles Hut in the Fortress Age.

Arrow Knight (5 KB)

Arrow Knight

Ranged Infantry

A noble warrior knight, the Arrow Knight is a long-ranged archer unit armed with flaming arrows. Use Arrow Knights to counter enemy artillery as well as fortifications. While they may seem similar to longbowmen, they do much less against units than what they are supposed to counter.

Canoe (6 KB)

Canoe

Naval Unit

This is the standard naval ship for the Aztecs. It can fish as well as fight, and transport units at the same time!

Canoe 2 (5 KB)

Canoe 2

Naval Unit

The War Canoe for the other two native civs is the strongest warship available. It costs a meager 150 coin and 100 wood, and serves its purpose dutifully.

Canoe 3 (6 KB)

Canoe 3

Naval Unit

The Tlolac Canoe is the strongest naval unit in the game. In previous patches an aztec player could amass four early in the game to siege a town center near the water. The Tlolac has an area attack when attacking land units, and has beefy hitpoints for taking shots.

Coyote Runner (5 KB)

Coyote Runner

Melee Infantry

The Coyote Runner makes up for the Aztec lack of cavalry by being a very fast and mobile infantry unit. IT is effectively a ‘psuedo’ cavalry unit. Its main advantage is that it takes up less space than a normal cavalry unit, leading to better pathfinding. Coyote Runners are very powerful in the current 1.01a patch for TAD, and do their job well. Be sure to use the age II coyote upgrade card that allows stealth as well as the (updated with patch 1.01a) ruthlessness card that will turn coyotes in to villager munching machines.

Eagle Knight (4 KB)

Eagle Runner Knight

Infantry

The Eagle Runner Knight is armed with javelins. While only being intended to counter cavalry, the Eagle Runner’s fast rate of fire and its good damage aid it in taking out most anything, in particular Heavy Infantry. An A+ unit.

Jaguar Prowl Knight (3 KB)

Jaguar Prowl Knight

Melee Infantry

Like the other ‘Prowler’ native units such as the Iroquois Forest Prowler and the Sioux Tashunke Prowler the Jaguar Prowl Knight has the special stealth ability. It counters heavy infantry and cavalry. Big Button technologies found at the town center are very useful for rushing an opponent or helping to defend against attacks. Post 1.01a patch; however, moved some of these technologies to the fortress age.

Macehualtin (8 KB)

Macehualtin

Light Ranged Infantry

Available in Age II, the Macehualtin is a ranged light infantry unit armed with a sling, to act like an archer. It functions in the same manner as a strelet. While weak in small numbers, maces quickly build up to become that pesky unit that you have a hard time getting around, especially when the Aztecs contain a card for 8 of them in colonial. Great unit.

Puma Spearman (4 KB)

Puma Spearman

Heavy Infantry

Also available in the Colonial Age, the Puma Spearman has a strong siege attack and is one of the best counters, next to swiss pikemen, against cavalry. Their siege makes them usefull for a fast rush to take down and opponent’s Town Center.

Skull Knight (3 KB)

Skull Knight

Heavy Infantry

The Skull Knight is the most powerful of all melee infantry units next to the dopplesoldner. Skull Knights are only available through the big button technology, the firepit, and some shipments. Their siege is very high. The politician granting 2 skull knights in colonial is a great politician.

Aztec WarChief (4 KB)

War Chief

WarChief

The Aztec War Chief unit is also be a foot-infantry unit. He has a special aura ability that doubles the experience points gained from Aztec military units killing enemy units within his area of effect. The Aztec War Chief also has special upgrades available through Age-up Politicians, one of which grants him a powerful melee attack similar to the Swashbuckler attack available to the British explorer.

Warrior Priest (5 KB)

Warrior Priest

Villager Unit

The Warrior Priest is a special unit for the Aztecs that can dance at the firepit and will count as two villagers whilst doing so. The Aztecs will start the game with one Warrior Priest. This means that the Aztecs are well-equipped to make the most of their Firepit early on in the game.
