Topic Subject: To those of you who thinks AOE3 graphics suck...there is hope
posted 09-08-05 07:02 PM EDT (US)
Due to an unfortunate dorm room party accident a while back i was forced to re-install a old ATI 9200 card that i had laying around in a box some place. It was on that card that i got my first taste of aoe3 last night.

I too was on the aoe3 graphics arent that good bandwagon. Although, i was surprised an 9200 would even run it.

Fortunatly today my BFG Geforce 6800GT OC DDRIII arrived in the mail, popped open my case installed that bad boy, updated drivers and stuff. Then started playing Aoe3 i am able to crank it to max settings (at 1024 resoloution anyway)on my system now with no lagg and i have to say i was blown away it was like i was playing a totally different game.

It was like getting to play the demo for the first time twice!! Today when i saw the light reflect off the water and off the white underside of a surfacing whale and the host of other stuff i was missing on the crappy card i had to bow down and acknowledge the graphical l337ness of ES.

Im just posting to let you guys out there know there is hope...put up the cash for a graphics card upgrade, if you really are a gamer you wont regret it in the long run and it will make aoe3 sooooo much better.

But wow diddent think it would even start on a ATI Radeon 9200.

Difference is like night and day.
Before on the sucky ATI 9200

I'm going to have to play on my crappy old comp w/ a Geforce 3 Ti 64mb lol, while my new comp's 6800 GT Pci-e is going through an RMA replacement.

That's a big difference. I have a 9200 currently though and I think it looks fine... I don't plan on upgrading the card for another 6 months at least.

Ok, thank you for that presentation.

Now I know why all the others were complaining :-)

Does anyone know if there is a noticeable difference between the geforce 6800 (not GT) and the Gt?

I'm getting a new computer from Dell, and the only high end cards offered with a system (unless you get a new one and install it) are the Radeon x850 and the geforce 6800 (not gt).

Curse my graphics card! Curse it! I was going to get more RAM, but I just might need graphics cards first.. Man, we really keep the computer industry moving.

That is the game on my Intel 82865G Graphics Controller. It is intragrated. My comp is 2.66GHz with P4 and 512RAM... And I have to say the game looks good on mine with most effects off or low. Also the game doesnt lag much. Only when I zoom in too much or have a lot of units on screen.

And to Maveric... WOW!!!

Why are people going by those Area's to judge the graphics on?

That isn't where you play the actuall game, that's a screen for your mainland city that you might see occasionaly once in a while when you select your "cards" to have something delivered. The graphics look a lot better on those period then they docompared to the the real gameworld that you'll be looking at most of the time.

(BEFORE)

(AFTER)

The difference I see in your two screenshots is that the "Before" does not have light bloom on, while the "After" has light bloom (foggy effect) enabled.

I don't know about you, but staring at the light bloom hurts my eyes . The first screenshot looks much clearer and nicer to me.

LOL

I was preety shocked when my game worked let alone how good it looks. I wonder what it will look like for me with a better card. I guess the prayer i said before installing worked .

This is good, yes, wise of ES to plan for the future. As of now I am running a computer with Intel Integrated Graphics, but a couple of years down the road I plan to buy a new Vista-ready PC. It should look fantastic by that time.

Bloom is more realistic BUT it makes it more blurry so turning it of makes the images much more clear.

I got the same reaction as the original poster.
    I have 2 pc's. one with a ATI 9800 and one with a Geforce 6800.

Shadermodel 3 makes a lot of difference as you can surely see from the other posts above.
But I am bit surprised by this since guildwars looks stunningly on both systems.

Ah well! Guess if you want fancy graphics you have to go for a fancy graphics card as well.

    DLS

Are you saying that your 9800 did not do a good job? What was the difference? I am looking at a 9800Pro to purchase, but I would like to know if that is a good idea.

    Thanks

Oh really? Buying a graphics card that doesn't suck helps the graphics? Who would have thought....
