In other news, I started "playing" Civ 5 the other day. And I mean, reading the Civilopedia and going through the Rome tutorial.

It seems like there's something missing.

We (John_Ross and I) both got our game this last weekend, when it went on sale for $12 or so. It was supposed to come with some sort of extra DLC, but we're not able to find out exactly what DLC we got for our $12.

Someone suggested Korea was a strong science and technology civ. John_Ross loves getting the sci/tech/culture domination victory so naturally he went looking for this civ in the civs menu, but apparently it isn't among the DLC we got for our sale price. I suspect the game download was gimped to make it cheap and a lot of later awesomeness was left out. I don't even know if we got Gods and Kings.

So I'll need to devote some wiki time to find out. I can't actually tell by going to the game menu - some of the DLC doesn't become an option in-game until later in the game.

I'm not really arsed to care much about this right now because although I wanted to dive right in and start a long campaign, Mojang came out with a Minecraft bug fix update and I have to patch 2 different servers today-ish or there will be Whining.

I love Civ 5, and i'm looking forward to the expansion pack this year enormously (which adds religions, espionage, and makes the late-game social policy tree you choose (between autocracy, order, and freedom) affect your relationship with the ai civs (as it should)).

When i bought it i didn't get extra DLC with the game (unless you're counting the Mongols), but i have subsequently bought the Viking civ (which comes with a fantastic 1066/battle of hastings scenario), the Korean civ and something else which is currently escaping my memory.

From the in-game mods browser i've also downloaded a couple of random map scripts - one which 'realistically' generates a planet with specific attention paid to tectonic plates, and one which 'realistically' generates a planet with specific attention paid to climate. as you might be able to tell i really like whole-planet maps which include continents and such, and without those two scripts i would usually play on 'fractal' which did an okay job but not a great one (the continents and terra scripts etc are not to my liking, too samey).

I've been holding off playing a big civ game since I heard about the expansion pack, as it really looks great and I don't want to burn out before that hefty influx of new civs and features and etc

Maybe if Korea and Vikings are packaged up with the new xpack, but I'll skip them if they're not. Which is sad, because Korea and Vikings sound like they have civ bonuses that appeal to me.

As for maps, I watched Mongrel play several games so far, and all the maps in a given type look really alike.

The climate RMS generator sounds neat. A step closer to realism. Deffo gonna try that.

Missed one of these recently by like 3 days. was so gutted, i really wanna get polynesia and the spain/inca pack. i particularly like the idea of the polynesia unique tile improvement and the scenario looks quite fun... hopefully i won't miss the next sale
